Yes, Nautilus is inspired by Jules Verne’s iconic 1870 novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. However, instead of a direct adaptation, AMC’s version serves as a prequel and origin story for Captain Nemo, exploring his rise from an oppressed Indian prince to the commander of the legendary submarine.
The showrunner, James Dormer, has reimagined Nemo as the Indian prince defeating colonial powers, weaving themes of environmentalism and imperialism into the narrative, just like the novel. It also features thrilling sea battles, sea monsters, and lost cities.

Nautilus is inspired by Jules Verne’s iconic 1870 novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
The show, as mentioned above, is a prequel to Venre's classic 1870 novel. Therefore, we can conclude that the show and the book share similar words, but the show is a fresh combination of historical drama, literary roots, and blockbuster adventure.
The show has its fair share of spectacular visuals over the ocean and underwater, most of which haven't been filmed in the actual sea. These scenes have been shot in a massive water tank in Australia with some additional CGI for expansive underwater effects, as per a report on CinemaBlend. The show indeed maintains the standard production value, with the submarine set being fully walkable and intricately detailed.
Nautilus has been praised critically as it is both a visceral adventure and a thoughtful anti-imperialist drama, with Shazad Latif's strong presence as Nemo aka Prince Dakkar, the visionary and vengeful leader. Alongside him is Georgia Flood as Humility Lucas, who is depicted as a British engineer's daughter, who eventually becomes a key crew member. Thierry Frémont is seen playing Gustave Benoit, the submarine’s designer, turned idealistic ally, while Pacharo Mzembe appears as Boniface, one of Nemo’s old comrades. In addition to this, Arlo Green is featuring as Turan, a crew member and alongside Tyrine Ngatai as Kai, among others.
Here is what we know about Nautilus post the release of the first 2 episodes

The series begins in a British-controlled penal colony in India set in the late 1850s, where Prince Dakkar, who later becomes Captain Nemo, is imprisoned. We come to realise that he is not an ordinary prisoner building the ship but a visionary who designed the revolutionary submarine, Nautilus. He appears as an opposing force amidst the colonisers, who are harsh and dehumanising and want to erase Dakkar's identity as a prince.
Nautilus is now seized and is meant to serve the imperial interest, but before that happens, Dakkar is laying the groundwork for an escape plan of stealing the submarine altogether. But eventually, he is forced to flee early, bringing a few fellow prisoners as his crew.
The escape ends up turning dangerous as soon as Nautilus collides with a surface ship, as the imperial forces are chasing them to silence the rebellious voice of Dakkar. This begins his journey to eventually become Captain Nemo.
The show is developed by Disney+, was dropped because of cost-cutting. It premiered internationally on Amazon Prime in late 2024 before AMC+ acquired U.S. and Canadian rights.
