An upcoming new British crime drama, Bookish, is set to premiere on July 16, and it is off to a great start as the show has been renewed for a second season even before the first season's premiere. Created by and starring the Sherlock co-creator, Mark Gatiss, the show premieres on U&Alibi with a stateside release on PBS. Here's everything we know about the British series.
Mark Gatiss' Bookish gets a renewal ahead of the series premiere
Described as a combination of "post-war nostalgia" and "reckless and life-affirming atmosphere of the times," Bookish is set in 1946 London, following a consultant detective to the police, Gabriel Book (Mark Gatiss).
Gabriel Book is a bookstore owner and an investigative sleuth in his downtime. His books give him all the knowledge he needs to help consult the police and solve the most intriguing cases. The show's logline reads as such:
"London, 1946, is the dynamic, dangerous and chaotic setting for this stylish new detective drama, with the whip-smart and debonair Gabriel Book (Gatiss) at the very heart of the story: a maverick consultant detective to the local police. The thousands of books that line the shelves of his shop provide him with all the knowledge he needs to solve even the most puzzling of crimes."
Along with sleuthing hobbies, Book is also a queer person at a time when it is illegal to be homosexual. Gabriel is in a "lavender" marriage with his best friend Trottie, played by Polly Walker (Bridgerton).
"His wife Trottie (Walker) runs the wallpaper shop next door. She’s a charismatic adventuress whom Book loves deeply but not physically, for they are in a 'lavender' marriage to help conceal Book’s sexual orientation in a time when it was illegal to be gay."
Bookish will be spread across six episodes in each season, with two episodes covering a case in the evolving and gritty London. Talking about the early renewal of the show, Gatiss said:
"I’m thrilled that the team at U&Alibi are allowing me to dive back into the world of Bookish and create more fiendish crimes for Gabriel Book and the team to solve. I can’t wait for viewers to immerse themselves in the world we’ve created when the first series airs in a few months’ time."
The show will also be starring Connor Finch as Jack, a man whom the couple takes in and who starts working at Book's shop. He ends up as an assistant to Book, not just in the shop but in his sleuthing escapades; however, it appears Jack's entry into Book's life is not as random as it appears to be. Additionally, Blake Harrison as Sergeant Morris, Buket Kömür as Nora, and Elliot Levey as Inspector Bliss will also be joining the project.
The first season will also be starring several guest stars throughout the six episodes, including Daniel Mays, Paul McGann, Michael Workéyè, Joely Richardson, Jacob Fortune-Llyod, Jonas Nay, and Luke Norris.
