The Originals premiered in 2013 as a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, focusing on the Mikaelson family, Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah, who return to New Orleans after years in exile. The show dives deep into the city’s supernatural underworld, where vampires, witches, and werewolves clash over power, survival, and old family feuds.
Over five seasons, it builds on the mythology of TVD while carving out its territory with darker themes, political maneuvering, and complex family dynamics. It also brings back familiar faces from Mystic Falls, but only when they make sense for the story.
Caroline Forbes, a major character in The Vampire Diaries, has a long history with Klaus Mikaelson. Fans spent years debating whether their relationship would resurface in The Originals. While Caroline does appear in the spin-off, her role is brief and concentrated entirely in Season 5.
She’s not part of the main plotlines in New Orleans, but she does show up during the final stretch of the series. Her appearances are tied to Klaus’s emotional arc and Hope Mikaelson’s future. She doesn’t fight in any wars or take part in major vampire politics, but she does serve as a reminder of Klaus’s past and the world outside New Orleans.
Caroline’s limited role in The Originals, explained

Caroline Forbes appears in The Originals during its fifth and final season. She shows up in five episodes, though not all of them involve her on screen. Two of her appearances are voiceovers, either through letters being read or short phone calls. Her first on-screen return happens in Season 5, Episode 1, when she meets Klaus in France.
She’s not there to restart anything romantic. She’s helping him reconnect with Hope, who is now a teenager and attending the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. Caroline works at the school and helps manage supernatural children like Hope. Her presence is mostly tied to how Klaus deals with his daughter and his fears about being a danger to her.
She doesn’t stick around in France. In later episodes, Caroline is heard through a letter she sends Klaus after Hayley’s death. She offers sympathy and gives him advice about dealing with grief. She’s not involved in any vampire or witch conflict going on in New Orleans.
She stays in Mystic Falls and continues her work at the school. In Episode 6, Klaus visits Mystic Falls, and she helps him understand what Hope is going through. They argue briefly, but Caroline holds her ground and pushes Klaus to stop avoiding his daughter. It’s the only time she openly criticizes him on The Originals without letting emotion get in the way.
In Episode 12, Klaus returns to Mystic Falls. This episode is also used as a backdoor pilot for Legacies. Caroline appears at the Salvatore School and gives Klaus an update on Hope.
She doesn’t take over the scene. She’s just there as a guidepost, reminding Klaus that he has people who want to help him if he lets them. She talks to him about sacrifice and what it takes to be a good parent. At this point, her scenes are about giving Klaus closure.
Her final appearance happens in Episode 13, which is also the series finale. She visits New Orleans briefly. Klaus is preparing to die to destroy the Hollow, the dark spirit threatening his daughter’s life.

Caroline doesn’t beg him to stop or change his mind. She simply sits with him, acknowledges his decision, and quietly says goodbye. There is no dramatic reunion. It’s not romantic. It’s respectful and calm, and she walks away knowing this is the end for him.
Caroline’s scenes in The Originals aren’t meant to make her a regular. She doesn’t become part of the main cast or involve herself in New Orleans politics. She stays connected to Klaus and Hope and limits her role to personal moments. All of her involvement is designed to show how far she’s come since The Vampire Diaries—from being wrapped up in drama to becoming someone who helps others from a distance, without needing attention or control.
