With Alice in Borderland Season 3 confirmed for a September release on Netflix, fans are wondering if their favorite player Chishiya will return in the final season.

Actor Nijirō Murakami played Shuntarō Chishiya in both seasons of this Netflix sci-fi series. However, this fan-favorite character is suspiciously absent from the trailer of the upcoming season. Chishiya was alive in the Season 2 finale and chose to return to the real world along with Arisu and Usagi. Additionally, Alice in Borderland Season 2 also revealed that Chishiya was a medical student, working at a corrupt hospital in the real world.

Nijirō Murakami is not confirmed for Alice in Borderland Season 3, which suggests that Chishiya would not appear in the final season. Additionally, many media outlets also reported that Murakami was struggling with some mental health issues and was on an acting hiatus, further fueling this speculation.

More on this in our story.

Murakami gained International recognition for his portrayal of Chishiya, the most Zen player in Alice in Borderland. After Season 2 revealed his backstory in the real world, fans were excited to see Chishiya back in Alice in Borderland Season 3. However, Chishiya does not appear in any of the official trailers released by Netflix or any promotional materials for the final season, which led to fan speculation.

According to multiple Japanese tabloids, Nijirō Murakami was on an acting hiatus, following some issues regarding his mental health. Many sources also reported that the makers had planned a major part for Chishiya, but since Murakami failed to show up on set, his role was altered in Alice in Borderland Season 3.

In August 2023, the actor resumed acting in limited projects. But nothing is confirmed about his appearance in the final season of the Netflix thriller. Since Chishiya was a huge part of the show and a fan-favorite character, the makers could also be keeping his role hidden, which is why he has not appeared in any of the trailers.

While Nijirō Murakami is not a major part of Alice in Borderland Season 3, he could still appear in a cameo, providing a conclusion to Chishiya's arc in the series.

Chishiya was one of the major players who survived the beach house explosion along with Arisu, Usagi, Niragi, Ann, and Kuina, and reached the Face Cards game in Alice in Borderland Season 2.

While Arisu and the gang banded together, Chishiya was separated from the group during the King of Spades' sudden killing spree in Episode 1. Throughout Alice in Borderland Season 2, Chishiya proved his intelligence and wit once more, and single-handedly completed two Face card games, namely the Jack of Hearts and the King of Diamonds.

Chishiya finally met Arisu at the Shibuya crossing in the Alice in Borderland Season 2 finale, but before the two could talk, Niragi shot Chishiya. Since Chishiya had decided to live his life more mindfully after the King of Diamonds game, he took another of Niragi's shots meant for Arisu. While Arisu defeated the Queen of Hearts, Chishiya managed to survive and was recovering from a heart attack in the real world in the Season 2 finale.

Just like other returning characters in Alice in Borderland Season 3, Chishiya was also well and alive in the real world, but had no recollections about his time in the Borderland. Arisu could certainly use Chishiya's intelligence to bring Usagi back in Alice in Borderland Season 3.

Alice in Borderland Season 3 will premiere on Netflix on September 25, 2025.
