Dark Winds is a gripping crime drama set in the 1970s Southwest, within the Navajo Nation. The series follows Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn and Deputy Jim Chee as they navigate a complex web of murders, robberies, and enigmatic spiritual events.

This psychological crime drama is an adaptation of Tony Hillerman’s long-running Leaphorn & Chee series, which includes almost 18 of his 37 books. Hillerman was initially praised for creating some compelling Native protagonists, but then was criticised for repeated generalization as the readers understood his outsider lens. However, the series attempts to rectify this mistake.

AMC's crime series Dark Winds is an adaptation of Tony Hillerman's novels, skillfully blended with modern storytelling elements. Tony, before dying in 2008, wrote 37 novels, of which 18 are based on investigative storytelling by Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn and Officer Jim Chee from the Navajo Tribal police.

The first book was The Blessing Way (1970), and the second one, where Chee joins the investigation, is People of Darkness (1980). These two books become the heart of the intertwined mysteries of the Navajo.

What made Hillerman’s novels unique was their seamless blend of traditional detective storytelling with Native American spirituality. He skillfully used the region’s striking geography and rich cultural mythology to create a tense, immersive atmosphere. This combination makes his work especially well-suited for visual adaptation. His books are often described as 'Southwestern Noir' for their distinctive style and setting.

The show, like other book series adaptations, doesn't adapt one book at a time and make one season out of it, but rather it has reimagined Hillerman's work as a psychological and character-driven thriller. They have pulled out several novels and restructured them as per the demands of the medium to make them more emotionally complex and culturally layered. Moreover, Hillerman's books offered the scope for this as his characters and worlds often revolved around the same region and characters.

Season 1 primarily adapts Listening Woman (1978) and People of Darkness (1980) but adds a more introspective focus on Leaphorn's grief and enhances Chee's inner conflict. Themes of spiritual trauma, colonial violence, and cultural identity give the entire story more of a cinematic tone. The show has played a lot on symbolism, creating a perfect atmosphere where the story can be realistically unfolded.

Despite being fictional, Dark Winds is rooted in history and the experiences of the indigenous people. It portrays some painful chapters in Native American History. Like the forced sterilization of Native women by the US government. The entire concept of boarding school, where the Native children were gradually stripped of their language and culture, among others. These real issues are woven into he crime narrative, giving the thriller more authenticity and complexity.

The show distinguishes itself from Hillerman's novels by being driven by a Native writers’ room and featuring a predominantly Native cast, giving the characters a culturally authentic grounding, a critique that the books often faced. The show balances Hillerman’s detective plotting with Indigenous storytelling traditions, where mystery often coexists with spirituality.

Dark Winds season 3 premiered in 2025 and is now renewed for another season.
