Dexter has had three spin-offs after it finished its last season in 2013. The latest spin-off, Dexter: Original Sin, which was released on 13th December 2024, has done well for itself and has been renewed for a second season.

Dexter: Resurrection is set to be released on Paramount+ with Showtime on 11th July 2025. But there's another spin-off in the works, the one about the Trinity Killer. We haven't heard much about the show, if and when it's getting made, but now the showrunner, Clyde Phillips, has shared an unfortunate update.

A Dexter spin-off about the Trinity Killer might not happen too soon

Dexter: Original Sin focused on the earlier years of Dexter Morgan's life, career, and double life as a serial killer. It is a prequel to the original series and turned out to be quite the success due to the fan base the protagonist has and the efforts put in by the cast and crew.

While there's excitement among the franchise's fans about the show getting a second season, there's some bad news. The spin-off based on the Trinity Killer might not get made. While it has been completely written and John Lithgow, who played the character Arthur Mitchell, has agreed to narrate the show as well, it has not been picked up by a network yet. Dexter's showrunner, Clyde Phillips, said in an interview with Collider,

"It’s completely written. John Lithgow has agreed to do the voice, to narrate it, but it is not picked up yet. We’re hoping that with the success of Resurrection, and Original Sin [season 2] has just been picked up, that Chris McCarthy and the Paramount people will want to expand the Dexterverse. But it has not been picked up yet."

All Dexter shows have been on Showtime, part of Paramount Global. But it has not been picked up yet. As the showrunner said, perhaps the hopeful success of Dexter: Resurrection and the second season of Dexter: Original Sin will prompt Paramount to pick up the show about the Trinity Killer.

There are other possible reasons as to why Paramount has not made its decision yet. The Trinity Killer was introduced in the first episode of season four of the original series, fifteen years ago. Many fans might not be interested in his story so many years later. Besides, as much as John Lithgow is a renowned actor, Arthur Mitchell might not be as successful a character as the show's protagonist.

The character was a serial killer and an antagonist who killed innocent people while maintaining a respectable public image. Such a character is not as popular as the protagonist and not exactly a character you root for. Paramount might be waiting it out before it picks up a show that has a chance of not being as popular as its predecessors.

But all is not lost. John Lithgow is set to appear as Arthur Mitchell in Dexter: Resurrection, and that might prove whether the character is still relevant. If Paramount gets a good response to the character's reappearance and the show in general, the Trinity Killer series might finally get picked up.

Dexter: Resurrection is going to be released on 11th July 2025 on Paramount+ with Showtime, and Dexter is streaming on Paramount+.
