Netflix's latest mystery thriller series Wayward premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, following which, it made its way to the streaming juggernaut on September 25, 2025.

The show follows a dark and compelling story about the fictional Tall Pines Academy, a school that claims to provide behavioural solutions for 'troubled teens', but harbours sinister secrets in reality.

Fans are wondering if Elliot Page is in Wayward. The answer is no. The Umbrella Academy star (who played Viktor/Vanya Hargreeves in the show) is not among the ensemble cast of the Canadian series. Fans are likely confusing Page with Mae Martin's Alex Demsey, a transgender cop in the show.

Page is a fellow Canadian actor, who came out as a trans man in 2020, officially changing his name from Ellen to Elliot.

More on this in our story.

Elliot Page is not in Netflix's Wayward

The recent Canadian thriller series is gaining popularity on Netflix, thanks to its dark and grisly themes and a strong performance by the ensemble cast. However, people searching for Elliot Page in Wayward are probably confusing the actor with the character of actor Mae Martin, a transgender cop named Alex Dempsey.

Since Page and Martin share slight similarities in physical appearance, people are likely to confuse them. However, Alex is played by Mae Martin, who is also the creator, co-showrunner, and one of the executive producers on the series.

Mae Martin is a Canadian actor, screenwriter, and comedian who is best known for Netflix's 2020 British comedy-drama series Feel Good, where they played a fictionalized version of their personality. Additional credits for Martin also include HBO Max's dark comedy series The Flight Attendant and Netflix documentary Stand Out: An LGBTQ+ Celebration. Additionally, Martin also released a Netflix comedy special in 2023, titled Mae Martin: SAP.

The Wayward star came out as non-binary in 2021 and declared their pronouns as they/them. Additionally, Martin has explored sexuality and gender in all of their projects.

Who is Alex Dempsey in Wayward?

Fans are likely confusing Elliot Page with Martin's character, Alex Dempsey, in Wayward.

Alex is a young transgender cop who arrives in the mysterious town of Tall Pines with his wife, Laura. While Alex spends the majority of his time in the town helping Leila and Abbie escape, he makes the shocking choice to stay behind with his wife and kids in the town.

The false sense of security and identity promised by Tall Pines convinced Alex that the town's cult is the only way to break free from the notions of hypermasculinity passed down to him by his father. He wanted his child to grow up without them, which is why he made the shocking choice of staying behind.

In an interview with Deadline, the Wayward star broke down his character's choice in the finale:

“Alex is a character who’s desperate for acceptance, and he finds this what seems like a liberal utopia, the way a lot of those cults in the ’70s did seem to promise all of the right things. And he’s definitely someone who’s seduced by and yearning for that kind of heteronormative hypermasculinity and a nuclear family.''

Wayward's ensemble cast also includes Alyvia Alyn Lind as Leila, Toni Collette as Evelyn Wade, Sydney Topliffe as Abbie, Sarah Gadon as Laura Redman, and Joshua Close as Duck.
