It appears as if the Apple TV sci-fi drama, Foundation Season 3, has finally found its footing with the audience. Since its premiere in September 2021, the epic sci-fi has been garnering critical acclaim with its visually stunning and thought-provoking narrative.
The over-the-top, larger-than-life TV show is an adaptation of Isaac Asimov's novel series of the same name. The first two seasons of the show were a thrilling experience owing to their unique narrative, intricate plot, and impressive cast. However, according to some fans of the show, Foundation is truly coming into its own in the third season.
A Reddit thread discusses fans' experiences throughout the three seasons of the Apple TV+ drama and why they think the third season is better than its predecessors. Here's what Reddit thinks.
Is Foundation Season 3 much better than the previous seasons? Redditors seem to think so

It isn't unusual for fans of a show to take to their Reddits and express their experience watching it. However, it is very unusual for a lot of Reddit fans to agree on one general statement. So, it came as a surprise when a majority of Foundation fans on Reddit seemed to think that Season 3 of the Apple TV+ show, which has been premiering with episodes weekly since July 11 and is set to air its season finale on Sept 12, is turning out to be on another level compared to the previous two seasons.
Critical Reception of the Three Foundation Seasons
To compare the three seasons of the Apple TV show, here is a look at the critic and audience reception of the three seasons so far.
Foundation Season 1: The first season of the Isaac Asimov adaptation received a 65% score at the Popcornmeter (audience score) and a 72% score on the Tomatometer (critics' score) at Rotten Tomatoes. The critics' consensus agreed that even though the story deserved the big-budget production it received, and the cast delivered an impressive performance, the first season seemed to struggle beneath the source material from Asimov.
Foundation Season 2: The second season of the adaptation received a 76% score at the Popcornmeter and a 100% score on the Tomatometer. This marked an improvement for the show, and the critic consensus was of the opinion that after the narrative's establishment in the first season, the show was coming into its own with a genuine grandeur.
Foundation Season 3: The third season, which has yet to air all of its episodes, has received a preliminary score of 74% on the Popcornmeter and an 89% score on the Tomatometer. The critics' consensus is of the opinion that Foundation Season 3, even though it is quite brilliant, doesn't measure up to the second season.
Redditors, however, are of a different opinion.
Audience reception of Foundation Season 3
The Redditors have a much different opinion than the critic consensus on the third season; as for them, witnessing the Mule storyline come to life in Foundation Season 3 is bringing together all the seeds that have been sown throughout the previous seasons in the narrative.
According to the fans, the reason why the third season stands apart from the first two seasons is the fact that the Isaac Asimov story is difficult source material to adapt. A Reddit comment on the thread said:
"I think the other part is, this is the section of the trilogy that is easiest to adapt to a TV format. Its factional space game of thrones, with some VERY prestige-TV twists either waiting to be dialed up or written in by Asimov already. By comparison, the chapters that seeded season 1 and parts of season 2 are almost parable-like in their brevity and scale. Its a difficult work to adapt overall."
The story, a seven-book-long narrative, is an exposition at the start, and now that the narrative has been established well, the show can proceed into character-driven stories that unfold naturally as they did in the books.
The major reason that is making Foundation Season 3 a game-changer for fans is that the storyline is entirely focused on the Empire and Demerzel, and that Gaal's story can finally be in the major narrative and not a side story.
A Reddit comment from a fan perfectly expressed this:
"S3 has pretty much seen every major story thread in the series converge at last. Gaal's story no longer seems like this random side story because she's directly interacting with Empire and Foundation. This season has also been almost entirely focused on Empire and Demerzel so far. They've leant much harder into the aspects of the show people loved in previous seasons."
So, even though the critical reception of Foundation Season 3 places it lower than the previous season, fans are of the opinion that the third season stands apart from both of the previous seasons, and each new episode is a marvelous masterclass in storytelling, marking Foundation as one of the top sci-fi shows.
