Happy Face is a popular and newly released crime drama on Paramount+ that takes a deep dive into the life of Melissa Reed. As seen in the first episode, Melissa works as a makeup artist for a talk show and seems to have a normal life.

However, little did anyone know that her father, Keith Hunter Jesperson, who is infamously called "Happy Face," is a convicted serial killer who has killed several women. Melissa's life takes a drastic turn when Keith confesses to a new crime and says he will only share details when his daughter meets him in person.

Since Melissa is just a makeup artist, everyone, including the team at the talk show, is shocked to learn that she's the daughter of a criminal. Not only this, Melissa also fears that this painful truth will hurt her children, as she never told them about Keith.

Following an intense finale, fans and viewers are now speculating about Happy Face Season 2. Unfortunately, Paramount Plus hasn't greenlit the show for a new chapter yet.

As the show begins, Keith claims that he killed another woman named Heather Richmond, a crime Happy Face never confessed to. At the same time, another man named Elijah has been given a death sentence.

This means that Melissa must waste no time in finding out the truth, as she believes Elijah might be innocent and the actual killer is still out there. Despite her father's confession, she doesn't believe him.

As of now, Happy Face has not been renewed for a second season. The creators originally framed it as a limited series, telling Melissa Moore’s personal story over the course of eight episodes.

That means the show was designed to wrap up neatly, and for the most part, it does. However, since the network hasn’t made any public announcements, fans are still waiting to find out if the series will return or end here permanently.

Even though the main mystery about Heather Richmond’s murder is solved by the end of Happy Face Season 1, the show doesn’t close every storyline. It ends on a suspenseful note with Keith Jesperson surviving a near-death experience and seemingly threatening Melissa’s husband, Ben.

This tension leaves plenty of room for the story to grow if more seasons are greenlit. The show’s creator, Jennifer Cacicio, has hinted that the real Melissa Moore’s life holds more emotional and dramatic material that could be adapted if given the opportunity.

The showrunner shared in a conversation with US Weekly that:

"[The real] Melissa’s been like, ‘Oh, if we get a season 2, I have so many stories for you. There’s definitely more to explore with these characters and these stories and the true crime world."

Actress Dennis Quid, who portrayed Melissa, also mentioned that Keith committed more than eight murders. She added:

"Whether he is doing that for attention — which probably is the case — that remains to be seen. But there’s more to explore here."

These chilling details about the real-life killer could open the door for future storylines if the show continues. Additionally, he show doesn’t continue with Melissa’s arc, there’s still another way forward.

Melissa Moore's Happy Face podcast, which inspired the series, already has a second season. That one focuses on a different woman who was affected by the crimes of her mother, a convicted murderer.

If the creators shift toward an anthology format, similar to Monsters or American Crime Story, the series could continue telling deeply personal crime stories, even if Melissa isn’t the main character anymore.
