Apple TV's Invasion premiered in October 2021 and has since been one of the popular shows in the genre of sci-fi. Created by David Weil and Simon Kinberg, the sci-fi series follows the story of an alien invasion on Earth, shown through the perspective of several ordinary human beings.

While watching a sci-fi series about aliens that sometimes makes you believe in the future occurrence of a similar event, it might also raise a question of whether the narrative is based on a best-selling novel. However, Invasion is actually not based on any novel, and is the result of Kinberg's extensive research on the topic.

From getting help from NASA to SETI, Kinberg has collected numerous information about the government's research on life beyond Earth and the military preparation on how it would be handled if something of this sort occurred in real life, and created this wonderful show, which is currently showcasing its Season 3.

More on this in our story.

Is Invasion based on a book? Details explored

While Invasion is not based on a book, the show is still created with the help of well-researched data taken from verified and credible sources. As revealed by the Hollywood Reporter, Kinberg approached experts from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the SETI Institute, who work on the exploration of the origin and nature of extraterrestrial life, to create a show that would feel authentic and real.

The quest to create the sci-fi series began five years before the show's premiere. In those long years, Kinberg collected various data and references from experts to learn about how much the government knows about extraterrestrial life. Furthermore, he also learned about the strategies of the defense forces if an event shown in the series ever occurred on Earth.

In the Hollywood Reporter interview, he talked about how military strategies are one of the aspects that shows like these tend to get wrong about. He said:

"I think a part of science fiction, especially when it comes to aliens, that sometimes people don’t get right in storytelling, is what is in place right now in our militaries and our governments in case of an alien visitation."

With the help of his extensive research on the topic, the co-creator of Invasion also learned that to infilterate Earth, the aliens have to make the atmosphere of the planet habitable for themselves first. The show's popularity also stems from the fact that NASA has been taking steps to understand the unidentified aerial phenomena more. To address the decision of NASA's examination of the strange sightings, Kinberg quipped:

"For me it was suddenly like, we’re actually making a show that people may watch and feel like this could happen at any moment as opposed to ‘this is a form of pure escapism.’"

Invasion stars Golshifteh Farahani, Shioli Kutsuna, Shamier Anderson, India Brown, Shane Zaza, Eric Lange, Azhy Robertson, Erika Alexander, and Tara Moayedi, in Season 3, which is streaming on Apple TV+ right now with new episodes premiering every Friday.
