It: Welcome to Derry finally wrapped up its exciting first season's run to an extremely positive critical reception. Much of it is due to the brilliant storytelling in the show, paired with an exceptional cast that brings Stephen King's world and characters to life. Apart from Pennywise and the kids in Derry, the one character that made an indelible mark on the audience was Chris Chalk's Dick Hallorann.

Hallorann's parting comments in the It: Welcome to Derry finale led fans to consider if a Dick Hallorann spin-off was currently in the works. Chris Chalk, in a recent conversation with TV Insider, addressed these rumors.

Dick Hallorann is an iconic character in the Stephen King universe who has telepathic talents known as the Shine, and his own story in the King universe is The Shining. However, It: Welcome to Derry introduces Chris Chalk as Dick Hallorann and also includes an in-depth look into Hallorann's history and use of his powers to survive Pennywise's 1962 cycle of terror.

The first season of Welcome to Derry mainly focuses on the Black Spot massacre and uses it to reveal hidden depths to Hallorann's powers. However, by the end of the first season, Hallorann decides to leave Derry and instead work as a cook for a friend in London. His final line on the show:

How much trouble can a hotel be?

This line is a cheeky reference to Dick Hallorann working as a chef at the Overlook Hotel in Colorado and the events that take place when he crosses paths with the Torrance family, as seen in King's The Shining.

This comment from Chalk's Hallorann has fans looking forward to a Dick Hallorann spin-off of It: Welcome to Derry. When asked about the rumors, Chris Chalk revealed that he himself proposed the idea to the higher-ups:

"I’ve pitched it! I have also said, "Hey, Dick can kind of do anything. Now that he’s connected to the universe, there’s no need to disconnect him."

Chalk explains how it would be intriguing to explain how Dick Hallorann becomes who he is during the events of The Shining, some 20 or 30 years into the future:

"I know in 20 or 30 years where he’s going to be, and I’m like, "Oh boy. What did he do to get there? What was the process to become this kind of more docile master of the Shine versus Dick now?" Because even once the show’s over, he’s by no means fixed. He’s just broke. He just broke five minutes ago, so I predict that Dick is not well at all still."

There are a lot of stories that could be explored if a spin-off of It: Welcome to Derry were to take place, but the creatives behind the show are focused on Derry at the moment and the larger story that they're trying to tell, as explained by showrunner Jason Fuchs in a conversation with Deadline:

"As a Stephen King fan, it is hard when you’re working on these things, to not let your mind wander to his other Stephen King books you cared about, and think about how those stories might interact...We all tried very hard to stay focused on the task at hand...So I’m trying as best I can to live in the moment and celebrate the joy of sharing these eight stories with the audience.”

So, for now, an It: Welcome to Derry spin-off focused on Dick Hallorann is not in the works, but we never know what the future holds.

All eight episodes of It: Welcome to Derry Season 1 are now streaming on HBO Max!
