One of the prominent characters in Netflix's Arcane is undoubtedly Jayce Talis. Voiced by Kevin Alejandro, Jayce was introduced to fans in Season 1 as a bright, idealistic inventor who wants to protect Piltover.

However, as the series progresses, Jayce becomes a complex character, raising questions about whether he's a bad guy or one of the protagonists. His journey in Arcane is filled with moral dilemmas of progress and conflicted relationships with people once close to him.

As seen in Season 1 Episode 1, Violet (Vi), Powder (Jinx), Mylo, and Claggor raided a lab that turned out to be Jayce's private lab where he was performing experiments with Hextech—a groundbreaking technology. This was the beginning of Jayce's journey as an inventor in the animated series.

With time, Jayce formed a strong bond with another character named Viktor, a fellow inventor who shared his vision for technological innovation. Despite the warnings and advice from the Piltover Council and Heimerdinger, Jayce, and Viktor continued with their Hextech research.

However, in Arcane Season 2, Jayce's story takes a dark and mysterious turn. It begins with his disappearance into the enigmatic Hextech Core, which changes him both physically and mentally, raising questions about who's influencing his journey. Keep reading to learn what happened with Jayce in the animated series.

As mentioned above, Jayce and Viktor made huge progress in their experiment and together they revolutionized Piltover. This also led Jayce to become a renowned leader and innovator of Piltover and by the end of Arcane Season 1, became a member of Piltover’s Council.

However, the weaponization of Hextech technology, especially by Jinx, marked the beginning of Jayce's transformation in Season 2. After his disappearance, Jayce ventured into the Hextech Core with Heimerdinger and Ekko to uncover its secrets.

Jayce then reemerged in Arcane Season 2 Act II with significant transformation including a Hextech gem in his forearm, a mechanical brace on his left leg that reflected an injury he sustained during his time in the Core, and his iconic hammer's design. These changes highlighted Jayce's transformation in Season 2 and the pain he has endured.

Jayce's views on Hextech also changed. The achievement he once considered the biggest part of his life, began to feel like a curse. This led Jayce to try eradicating it which didn't sit well with his co-inventor Viktor.

Jayce's views on Hextech changed drastically, as he started to believe that it destroys everything it touches and that he must be removed entirely. Viktor on the other hand, became a semi-religious figure in Zaun and also started advocating for the technology's benefits.

Their distinct views gradually strained their once-strong friendship and it eventually ended with Jayce killing Viktor. The murder is considered one of the most heart-wrenching moments in Arcane, as Viktor and Jayce both believed in Hextech's potential to change the world.

However, after emerging from the Hextech Core, Jayce only had one thing in mind— destroy Hextech. In a confrontation with Viktor, Jayce first tries to show mercy, but his quest to destroy Hextech eventually leads him to kill his close friend and ally.

Since he began as a determined inventor, it was hard for Vikotr to believe Jayce had entirely turned into a bad guy. In his final moments in Season 2, Vikotr hinted at a possible outside force manipulating Jayce's actions. Additionally, the glowing stone on his wrist also raises questions about an external force influencing him.

His actions in Season 2 paint Jayce as an anti-hero or tragic figure, instead of an entirely bad guy. He didn't kill Viktor and Councilor Salo because of his range, but to stop them from advocating for Hextech, a technology he invented.
