And Just Like That has not only brought back iconic characters from Sex and the City, but has also introduced a slew of fresh characters. In the third season, legendary actress and singer Patti LuPone has joined the series in a guest role.

LuPone stars as Gia, the mother of Giuseppe, an Italian poet who is hired by Charlotte to work with Anthony at his bakery shop. While Giuseppe and Anthony’s relationship soon turns romantic, Gia disapproves of her son’s boyfriend.

Though the woman shares a cordial equation with the leading ladies of the show, she often taunts and targets Anthony, leading to some humorous and some dramatic situations. Here is all you need to know about Patti LuPone’s character in And Just Like That.

Patti LuPone stars as Gia in And Just Like That Season 3

Patti LuPone is introduced as Gia in And Just Like That Season 3 Episode 7, and continues to make appearances in Episode 8. Gia is Giuseppe’s strong and opinionated mother. She arrives from Italy and quickly causes turbulence in Anthony’s life.

Gia was born in Buffalo, New York, but moved to Italy when she was 19 to become a painter. She tells Carrie and her friends that she once wanted to be the next Botticelli, a famous artist. But her plans changed after she fell in love with a man much older than her, Giuseppe’s father.

When her stepchildren did not like her, Gia decided to study psychology to understand them better. That choice led her to become a therapist. Gia quickly bonds with Carrie because they both have problems with their partners’ children. Gia tells Carrie to always be herself and that pretending to be someone else never works.

This advice helps Carrie deal with her own struggles with Aidan’s kids. Even though Gia gets along well with Carrie, she does not like Anthony. She tells everyone else to call her ‘Gia,’ but tells Anthony to use her full name. She does not like his jokes or the fact that he is much older than her son.

Gia makes snide comments about how sad it looks for an older man to be with someone like Giuseppe. She does not hide her disapproval and makes it clear she does not think Anthony is the right match for Giuseppe.

Carrie tries to tell Gia that Anthony is a sweet and kind man, but Gia does not buy it. She seems to think Anthony is too bold and too old. While Anthony hopes to impress her by offering to cook for her, she does not seem interested in warming up to him.

Hence, Gia’s arrival could cause issues in Anthony and Giuseppe’s relationship. It remains to be seen if they let her behavior affect their connection or brace through the challenge.

Patti LuPone’s casting in And Just Like That Season 3 was announced in January 2025. At the time, the actress confirmed in an interview with Radio Andy that her character is going to hate Mario Cantone’s character, Anthony:

“I’m Mario [Cantone]’s nemesis. I’m Sebastiano [Pigazzi]’s mom. I’m the Italian lover’s mom that challenges Mario.”

LuPone has also been a part of several other TV shows, including Penny Dreadful, American Horror Story: Coven, Oz, Life Goes On, and Falcone. She was most recently seen in Disney+’s Agatha All Along.

And Just Like That Season 3 airs new episodes on HBO Max on Thursdays.
