Godfather of Harlem just finished up with its fourth season, and fans are already wondering what's happening next. Will a Season 5 be happening? While there hasn't been any official confirmation as of yet, the showrunner Chris Brancato has talked about the door being open for a Season 5.
With the story now set in 1966 and Bumpy Johnson's journey ending just two years later, there's still some room left to explore.
Where the story stands and why Season 5 might still happen
The fourth season of Godfather of Harlem brought Bumpy Johnson back into the spotlight after a long wait. Set in a Harlem battling for control, the season introduced Frank Lucas into the mix and reignited Bumpy's war with the Mafia.
The finale wasn't just about criminal turf wars, though. Bumpy's own family faced danger, and he had to form unlikely alliances to retaliate against Joe Colombo.
But fans are focused on the bigger question: will the story continue?
So far, MGM+ has not confirmed a fifth season. Still, Chris Brancato offered a promising sign in a recent interview. He told The Hollywood Reporter,
"They tell me this show premiered very, very well [this season]..."
He added that although he's still waiting for official word, strong viewership could mean another chapter is on the way. Brancato also reminded fans that the timeline still has room.
"Bumpy died in '68 and we're in '66 right now..."
Brancato mentioned this implying that the show could keep going if Forest Whitaker and the network are on board.
There's even talk of a possible shift in focus if Bumpy's story comes to an end. Could Frank Lucas take the spotlight next? Brancato further adds;
"Can this story continue as Godfather of Harlem but now the godfather is Frank Lucas? Yeah, I think so. I hope so..."
So while nothing is officially confirmed, there's enough content and stories left another season ahead.
What keeps Godfather of Harlem relevant and where it could head next
A big part of Godfather of Harlem is how it mixes up real history with drama made for the show. Season 4 wasn't just about guns and power plays but the story also touched on Harlem's civil rights struggles, its changing identity, and how the community was shaped by bigger movements spread across America.
This season explored the rise of the Black Panther Party in New York, and even hinted at links to future cultural icons. It touched upon everyday problems. Problems like punishment at school or discrimination that were all deeply connected to the bigger fight for something as simple yet so powerful as justice.
Brancato, who co-created the show with Paul Eckstein, explained that while they didn't intend to make political statements, the reality of the 1960s forced the story to move in such a direction.
Brancato termed the show as a "mirror" to the contemporary times. And that's exactly why the series still speaks to the viewers today. Even though it's set in Harlem in the past, the themes spoken about in the show still hit hard in the present.
This relevance is what could perhaps help forward the show into a Season 5. With more of Bumpy's life left to explore and Frank Lucas now being part of the story, Godfather of Harlem still has more stories to tell.
Brancato has shown interest in keeping the tone fresh too, pointing to the show's use of contemporary music and modern storytelling style to keep younger viewers connected.
While Godfather of Harlem Season 5 hasn't been officially confirmed, the signs are still hopeful.
The show's creator clearly believes there's more to say. Whether it continues with Bumpy or moves the story to Frank Lucas, the story of Harlem feels far from over.
