After an explosive series finale, The Waterfront Season 2 could likely be on the cards. While Netflix is yet to renew its latest crime series for a sophomore season, the creator and the star cast seem hopeful that the show has a bright future ahead.
The Waterfront debuted on June 19, 2025, and follows the dysfunctional Buckley family in the fictional seaside town of Havenport, North Carolina. After some major troubles in their fishing business, they enter the illegal and dangerous world of drugs to stay afloat and survive.
The show stars Holt McCallany, Maria Bello, Melissa Benoist, and Jake Weary in the main roles. While it is still early for Netflix to predict the future of the series, the Season 1 finale suggests that The Waterfront Season 2 will likely happen.
More on this in our story.
The Waterfront Season 2: What has the creator said about the show's future?
While the show has largely received mixed reviews from critics and an average score of 65% on Rotten Tomatoes, it could likely return for season 2. Viewers have enjoyed watching the dysfunctional Buckley family, and the season 1 finale left much scope for a new and darker story for the family in the next chapter.
Discussing the season 1 finale with Netflix's Tudum, creator Kevin Williamson teased a bright future for the series as the stage is set for Belle to take over:
"This season was about Harlan and Cane — how they reconciled their differences and how they’re going to move forward. Now Belle is a little more front and centre. She’s not living in the shadows.”
In another interview with TV Insider, Weary (Cane) also expressed his desire for The Waterfront Season 2:
"The end of the first season feels like it’s still moving because you don’t want it to stop, right? So that’s a good sign, I think, for season two. I would like to see it just keep moving. I would like to see the family come together to stave off some universal villain."
The Waterfront Season 2: The Season 1 finale sets an explosive story for the Buckley family
While Bree's drug-lord abductor shockingly dies in the Season 1 finale, the family's troubles are far from over.
While Season 1 focused on the families' combined efforts to stay afloat and survive their harrowing conditions, The Waterfront Season 2 could likely explore a civil war within the family.
Since Season 1 largely focused on Cane and Harlan's relationship, it is Belle's time to shine, and the finale suggests that she will likely make a deal with the enemy, the Parkers. After Grady's death, another rival family (Parkers) has entered the picture, labelled as "a school of sharks" by Williamson.
Throughout the first season, we learn that it was the Parker family who was behind Harlan's father's execution. While Harlan supposedly did not go after the much stronger Parker family, a war might be inevitable in The Waterfront Season 2.
The final minutes of the Season 1 finale saw Emmett Parker summon Belle to the Buckleys' fish house and suggest a deal to her, rather than her husband.
Talking about the Parker family's decision to work with Belle rather than Harlan, Williamson said:
“She's much more rational. She’s not going to make decisions based on her emotions. She’s too smart and levelheaded for that. They see a true partnership with her in a way that they’ll never have with Harlan.”
While Belle desperately wants to lead, her partnership with the Parker family will surely create internal conflicts with her husband and the Buckley family, likely leading to a full-blown war between the families in Season 2.
