Music sensation RAYE made a striking guest appearance in Netflix’s recently released high-profile drama Black Rabbit. Released on September 18, 2025, the show has quickly become a notable addition to the streaming giant’s 2025 slate.

The critically dissected eight-episode series features Jude Law and Jason Bateman as two brothers caught between the ruthless, maddening Manhattan nightlife, much of which takes place in the luxurious Black Rabbit restaurant and VIP lounge.

The series has generated much interest due to its gritty storylines and solid lead characterizations of Law and Bateman. Within the many depths of the series, adding musicians such as RAYE serves to further emphasize the authenticity and energy of the lively club scenes, which are the backdrop of the story.

Yes, RAYE stars in Black Rabbit, but plays a small part, which is symbolic as well as significant storywise. The show is about two brothers, Jake and Vince Friedken, deeply involved in Manhattan's nightlife and underworld as they own the high-end Black Rabbit club and VIP lounge.

RAYE plays herself in the club, a central location where much of the action happens. It lends credibility to a vibrant exploration of a glittering but poisonous world.

RAYE makes a guest appearance rather than a character role, playing herself as a featured musical act at the Black Rabbit club. This musical appearance is more than mere entertainment, as it is a narrative anchor to an important moment in a series.

Her performance, which features a rendition of the jazz classic What a Difference a Day Makes, is employed by the show to intensify the tension in the atmosphere and underline the sparkling but unstable world around the main characters.

As a story, it is entrenched in family drama, the pursuit of ambition, and the clash between public achievement and internal turmoil. The club owner, Jake, has trouble running his business and his dysfunctional family life, mainly with his brother Vince, who is reckless and whose irresponsible behaviour puts the restaurant and their personal relationship at risk.

The close relationship between music, nightlife, and the dramas happening to the characters is manifested through the guest appearance of RAYE.

RAYE publicly revealed how thrilled she was to have been asked to join the cast. She exclusively told Billboard that she is grateful that she could engage in a new artistic form and stated:

“I am very grateful to Netflix and the Black Rabbit team for inviting me to be a little part of this series. To Miss Laura Linney for having me, it was such a privilege to play a teeny tiny part under your vision. Reading my very first ever ‘on screen’ lines, whilst staring into Jason Bateman’s eyes is a life experience I will never forget, hahahah!”

What is Black Rabbit about?

Black Rabbit is a gritty, intense drama about life in the colorful and dangerous nightlife of Manhattan, centered on the ups and downs of a restaurant and VIP lounge. The show is about family, wanting it all, trust and betrayal, and holding on to secrets in the darker nooks of New York City’s elite.

The core story is about two brothers, Jake Friedken (Jude Law) and Vince Friedken (Jason Bateman), entwined in a tense relationship of discord, mutual competition, and deep personal secrets.

Jake is the controlling owner and artistic genius of the Black Rabbit, attempting to safeguard his business and image, while Vince is grappling with his own demons and ends up endangering the future of the restaurant with careless and increasingly explosive choices. Their strained relationship is the driving force of the drama and the emotional base of the series as they balance between managing the club and a background of crime, loyalties, and ethical compromise.

As of late September 2025, the series has a 78% critical and 74% audience score. The show averages an IMDb user rating of 7.2/10, indicating a broadly favorable opinion with admiration of atmosphere and casting, but some criticism of plotting.

Being a limited drama series, it was created with a self-contained narrative. No second season has been officially confirmed by the showrunners and Netflix, and the story itself is largely self-governing, with all major conflicts and character lines being resolved by Episode 8, and no additional ones arising.

Black Rabbit is the creation of husband and wife duo Zach Baylin and Kate Susman. Zach Baylin is a prolific screenwriter and producer who has gained an Oscar nomination for the screenplay King Richard and has contributed to Creed III and Bob Marley: One Love. Kate Susman is an accomplished producer who has worked on The Order and other productions.
