Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack's animated absurdist comedy series Smiling Friends will return for Seasons 4 and 5 on Adult Swim. The surreal adventures of Pim and Charlie, which debuted in April 2020, wrapped its third season run on November 30. Naturally, fans were concerned that their favorite comedy show might get canceled after Season 3, but that's not the case.

Smiling Friends follows Pim Pimling (voiced by Cusack), Charlie Dompler (voiced by Hadel) and the employees at the titular charitable company, which is aimed at bringing happiness and positivity to their clients' lives. Each episode of the show features a crazy adventure that results in absurdist humour and hearty chaos.

More on this in our story.

Smiling Friends is renewed for Seasons 4 and 5

Eager fans wondering if their favorite absurdist comedy series will return for more seasons, worry not. Smiling Friends is not canceled after Season 3. In fact, the animated series was renewed through Seasons 4 and 5 back in June 2025. The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Cusack and Hadel at the Annecy Animation Festival in June 2025, where they shared this exciting news. Two more seasons of the comedy series are already in production at Williams Street.

While the show is renewed for Seasons 4 and 5, the co-creators have certainly thought about its end. In their interview with The Hollywood Reporter, they revealed how the show 'won't go on and on':

“We want it to be like a nice little box set, and we’ve talked about potential seasons that we’d want to stop at, for sure, and it depends on the day. Sometimes we’ll wake up and be like, ‘You know what? Three seasons could be enough.’ But then the next day, we’re like, ‘No, actually, another number sounds better.’ So we always go back and forth, but we are pretty staunch on it not going on forever.”

Cusack and Hadel's comments suggest that the show might come to an end soon, but fans are certainly getting more episodes and hearty laughs for now.

Season 3 featured crazy adventures and a fresh look at secondary characters

Smiling Friends might have wrapped its third season run on November 30 but fans are calling it the best installment yet. Before the latest season's premiere, the co-creators teased how the upcoming seasons will feature new & crazy adventures for Pim and Charlie, a fresh look at the secondary characters and new mediums of animation.

Cusack and Hadel rightly delivered on that promise as Smiling Friends Season 3 was a wild ride that featured a special spotlight on secondary characters like Mr. Frog and Glep. Episode 2 titled "Le Voyage Incroyable de Monsieur Grenouille" saw Mr. Frog assuming the leadership of the entire planet and announcing his role of "emperor of earth". The co-creators feel that Mr. Frog is the show's 'spirit of insanity' and fans loved the special feature on his character.

Additionally, the Smiling Friends Season 3 finale titled 'The Glep Ep' was a Christmas-themed episode that had Glep, the smallest and most underrated character, at the heart of the narrative.

The animated series is slowly building a loyal fanbase on Adult Swim, with each new episode cementing its place among the best animated comedies airing on television currently.
