Netflix's gritty new crime thriller Black Rabbit by Zach Baylin has been the talk of the town ever since it premiered last week. The story centers on two brothers, one who has struggled his way to success and runs a restaurant in New York, Jake Friedken (played by Jude Law), and the other, Vince Friedken (Jason Bateman), who is nothing but trouble.
As seen in flashbacks in Black Rabbit Episode 1, the restaurant-bar was started as a joint venture by both the siblings, but over time, things went awry, which made Vince leave everything behind (including his daughter Gen). But years later, when Jake gets a call from his brother with the latter saying, "I don’t have a f*ck-ton of options—I just gotta jump," the former (despite knowing what might be the cost) invites Vince, or basically "The Cyclone," back into his somewhat sorted life.
Black Rabbit Episode 1 found the perfect title for Vince's reappearance - The Cyclone
Vince's first appearance in Black Rabbit Episode 1 gives off a typical homeless addict aura, desperate to find means to make money (or maybe just survive). As we witness in the pilot, Vince tries to set up a deal in vintage coins with two shady guys whose intentions don't seem very honest.
However, things go south when one of them pulls a gun and forces Vince to leave the stack of coins behind. Though the struggling 52-year-old "nothing-to-lose" kind of guy initially resists (what seemed like his last hope to get some money), he loses out on the cash.
But in a shocking turn of events, Vince loses his calm and tries to attack the thieves. Unfortunately, amidst all the tumult, he accidentally runs over one of the men (not once but twice).
Following the messed-up situation, Vince realizes that his life now hangs in the balance, and he needs to leave Reno. The last person to call is his brother Jake, who is back in New York handling his restaurant bar (the Black Rabbit) and co-parenting his adolescent son Hunter with his wife Hal.
The moment Vince sets foot in the city, we learn that he is not a very clean guy. He has huge debts with people who seem to be trouble and also receives a threat to pay everything off within two weeks (and also gets hurt during the confrontation).
On the other hand, we learn that Jake is struggling to get extra cash for his business by striking a deal out of his late mother's house (which is not in very good condition). However, Vince's past involvement also hits an awkward note between the two siblings when Jake reminds his brother that the latter took collateral from the house to get a loan.
Though Jake clearly loves his brother a lot (and vice versa), their troubled past always seems to be standing between them (especially because of Vince's mess). Moreover, when the house deal does not happen, Vince loses his hopes to get some cash and goes to an old buddy, Wes (an investor in the Black Rabbit's business and Jake's close friend), for money. Sadly, he gets refused and runs out of ways to clear the debts of the goons who had threatened him earlier.
Though Wes and his girlfriend Estelle were initially very happy to see Vince back in the house, they soon smell trouble when the latter asks for a loan. Not only this, but Vince's estranged daughter Gen (Odessa Young) also does not approve of his father's sudden return to New York and makes it clear that she doesn't want to remain connected.
With Vince's arrival, it feels like New York City has found a source of trouble that was long gone before, The Cyclone. And Jake might have just indulged in his brother's strange ways of going around and brought in problems for the Black Rabbit.
Moreover, the robbery scene at the very beginning of Black Rabbit Episode 1 (the present timeline) is basically the indication of the storm that Vince had just thrown at his brother and his business (as he had blood on his hand). Following Vince's re-emergence, it all became a matter of time.
