A new Young Frankenstein series could be coming to FX soon! The series will be based on Mel Brooks’ iconic 1974 comedy movie. The FX series, currently titled Very Young Frankenstein, will have Brooks on board as the executive producer with his partner Kevin Salter.
The FX series will be executive produced by Stefani Robinson of What We Do in the Shadows along with Taika Waititi and Garrett Basch. If the project is green-lit, Robinson will also take on the duties of showrunner. Michael Gruskoff, who had produced the original movie, will also be joining as executive producer with Disney’s 20th Television as studio partner.
Young Frankenstein follows the story of Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (played by Gene Wilder). He would initially be embarrassed to be associated with his grandfather Victor Frankenstein’s legacy, who was known as the mad scientist. To stand away from Victor’s shadows, Frederick will pronounce his name as ‘Fronk-en-steen’. However, he would go on to embrace his grandfather’s research, creating a monster of his own.
Very Young Frankenstein is close to getting a pilot on FX. The original movie was critically acclaimed and also found commercial success. The movie received two Academy Award nominations as well. It is a parody of the classic movies Frankenstein (1931) and The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) based on Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel. The movie is written by Brooks and Wilder.
What is Young Frankenstein about?
The movie Young Frankenstein revolves around Frederick Frankenstein, whose grandfather Victor Frankenstein was an infamous scientist. Victor was known for his twisted science experiments to create monsters. After he inherits Victor’s Transylvania castle, he would decide to create his own monster to clear his grandfather’s name. He would partner with Igor (played by Marty Feldman), whose grandfather also worked with Victor.
Frankenstein movies in the early 1930s introduced the audience to the horror and monster genre. Young Frankenstein is a comedic tribute to it with its quirky narrative and brilliant acting. Brooks wanted to stay true to the original movies, and shot the movie in black and white, an out-of-the-box move at the time. The movie was able to capture the look and feel of the 1931 James Whale movie.
There are no further updates on Very Young Frankenstein, which is currently in works at FX.
