After an acclaimed first season, Hazbin Hotel is back to enthrall audiences with its chaotic yet complex characters and catchy songs. The second season of the show premiered on Amazon Prime Video on Wednesday, October 29, and viewers will therefore need an active subscription of the service to view the series. Hazbin Hotel Season 2 will release two episodes on a weekly basis.

In an interview with Auto Straddle, creator Vivienne Medrano talks about the success of the series, which began as a passion project and was initially crowdfunded and posted on YouTube before it was picked up by streaming platforms.

Medrano states that “it doesn’t feel real” and she definitely learned a lot when the show took off. She states,

“I learned so much from the making of the pilot because it was such a scrappy project. It grew as it went. It was, for lack of a better word, amateur. Because I was amateur! I was learning so much and I was very, very fresh...But it was so fun. We were a group of people working together to make something happen, even if it was a very uphill battle. It was a completely different process when it came to the series. But I’d made another show called Helluva Boss in the meantime and that one taught me a lot about a more structured pipeline. Every animated show is different and has different needs...So it was still a big learning curve to figure out what those needs were for Hazbin...I’m very thankful for the entire development period.”

Hazbin Hotel is primarily a musical and Medrano mentions that she was influenced by various musicals and styles:

“Yeah, the musical styles are all over the place...The characters are diverse in their musical styles and their genres. If certain characters are singing, they’re not going to sing something that sounds like Broadway — they’re going to sing a pop song or a more contemporary ballad. It’s going to be different depending on the needs of the character and the scene.”

In the interview, Medrano states that she was influenced by musicals like Chicago, Little Shop of Horrors, Annie, and Something Rotten. Ultimately, Medrano states that even though the show deals with sin and sinners, “the main theme of the show is redemption."
