Toni’s proposal for Lewis to spend the night together in order to drop the lawsuit in Reasonable Doubt Season 3 not just shocked Jax, but also the audience. The more surprising twist came when Lewis decided to stay back despite Toni signing the papers. Lewis wanted to process the grief of losing the child and finally deals with the trauma.

McKinley Freeman, who portrays the role of Lewis Stewart in the series, shared that it was his moment to find closure in Reasonable Doubt Season 3. His character finally accepts responsibility for his shortcomings. Freeman told Variety,

Lewis isn’t a bad dude. At the end of the day, losing a person or having a loss at that magnitude without having an outlet for it could drive anyone crazy. Whether Lewis realizes it or not, there’s probably something inside of him that knows that’s that. He could’ve left, but the volatility of that situation is his responsibility. This is the mess that he made. It’s his responsibility to clean it up.”

Created by Raamla Mohamed, Reasonable Doubt is a Hulu legal drama that revolves around attorney Jax Stewart (played by Emayatzy Corinealdi), who handles high-profile cases, while navigating through her complex personal life struggles.

At the end of the previous season, Jax was shocked to learn that Toni (played by Tristan Cunningham) has filed a lawsuit against Lewis for the death of their child. Toni and Lewis were having an affair. While Jax and Lewis work on their marriage, the lawsuit keeps them from moving forward. To make things worse, in Reasonable Doubt Season 3, Toni will ask Lewis to spend the night with her.

Why did Lewis spent the night with Toni, despite her signing the papers in Reasonable Doubt Season 3?

As Reasonable Doubt Season 3 premiere sets the stage for the lawsuit, it is understood that Toni wants Lewis to take the responsibility for the death of their child. And seeing that the lawsuit has gone for a year, she makes the ultimate move. She is ready to settle the case if he spends a night with her. Toni has been dealing with the trauma for a long time, and it makes her angry that Lewis does not feel the pain as her.

In Reasonable Doubt Season 3, Lewis will make it clear to Jax that Toni’s proposal is a means to get to talk to him. On the promise to text every hour, Jax agrees to the arrangement. In the episode, Lewis and Toni will take down the nursery. While they slowly start connecting, Toni will make se**al advances, which Lewis will shut down immediately. Toni has an emotional breakdown at the moment and tells him that he never cared for her or their child. Enraged, she will sign the papers and asks him to leave the house.

In Reasonable Doubt Season 3 episode 2, while Lewis could have left the very moment she signed the papers, he does not. In the morning, Toni will find him holding on to the baby’s Eagles jersey and crying. Toni realizes that he was grieving as well. They both have an emotional conversation about the loss of their baby. Lewis accepts that he should have been more empathetic towards her.

Freeman shared that this is a turning point for Lewis, who is making peace with his past while looking forward to growing as a person in the relationship with Jax in Reasonable Doubt Season 3. He said,

“One of the reasons Lewis has to have empathy is that it’s what he’s learning to be better at with his wife. Lewis is learning how to be more present in a way that’s valuable to Jax and communicate in a way that’s building and not tearing down. He’s a dude trying to figure it out in this messed up situation. His empathy towards Toni is recognizing that he’s made a mistake that he can’t change and has to be responsible for. He’s also reconciling that with a life that he’s still trying to build sustainably with Jax.”
