Netflix's latest Scottish thriller Dept. Q is being hailed as a must-watch crime series, with intriguing characters and an intense storyline.

Starring Matthew Goode, the show is based on Danish writer Jussi Adler-Olsen's book series of the same name. It follows Detective Carl Morck, who forms Department Q in a basement office with misfit officers and solves cold cases together.

Season 1 was released with nine episodes on May 29, 2025, and received positive reviews from audiences and critics alike.

While Netflix has not yet renewed Dept. Q for Season 2, creator Scott Frank, seems positive about the show's future.

In an interview with Collider, Frank revealed that he already has a story in mind and would like to adapt book two from Olsen's series:

''The second book in the series is quite good, so I’ve got a great idea for a second season. It is another cold case and also a current case, at the same time, that they’re looking into. So, I would do that.''

In addition, he also revealed that Season 2 might contain only 6 episodes but it will likely return.

The Dept. Q finale felt like the beginning of Morck's new team, ready to take on a new cold case. While Season 1 largely solved Merritt Lingard's mystery, the finale saw Morck with new teammates Akram and Rose, with his former partner Hardy, eager to join in the adventure.

As Frank revealed in his interview with Collider, Dept. Q starts with a dismantled team, with each member living in isolation.

However, by the Season 1 finale, Morck and all these troubled individuals come together as a force, ready to tackle new cases and the show ends on a happy note, a positive future not only for the team, but also for the show.

While it's still early for Netflix to renew Dept. Q for Season 2, the show's resounding success and Frank's comments indicate that a sophomore season is inevitable and the fans will surely see more of Morck and his team, taking on new cold cases in the next chapter.

While the show aptly portrayed all the nuances of the main characters' professional lives, there remains a mystery about their personal lives, especially that of the Syrian immigrant police officer, Akram Salim. While he seems to be a kind and sweet soul, it is hinted that he might have a dark past, which Season 2 could possibly explore.

In addition to Frank, Goode also seems eager to return as Carl Morck in Dept. Q Season 2 and the actor also shared some ideas about the next chapter with Collider:

''If we do get to go again, and there’s nothing greenlit yet at all, that would be very exciting. But it’s also exciting to possibly see a bit more of what Carl’s life is and his home life, which is a very interesting throuple that’s going on.''

He added:

''I don’t want to put any ideas into the genius’ (Scott Frank) brain, but I want to see what it’s like back at Akram’s house with his daughters. There’s a lot of stuff to play around with. It’s going to be really exciting if we do get to come back.''

While the thriller series is surely one of a kind, Season 1 was just the tip of the iceberg. While it introduced the audience to the characters, there is still much backstory to unpack, and the creator, as well as the stars, all seem to have amazing ideas about the next adventure of Morck's team.

Dept. Q Season 1 is streaming on Netflix.
