Andor has become one of the more successful stories to come from the Star Wars universe. Season 2 of the critically acclaimed show, which wrapped up recently, gave the audience an in-depth look into the evil workings of the Galactic Empire. Diego Luna, who portrays the role of Cassian Andor in the Disney+ series, shared that the episodes around the Ghorman plaza and the senate speech by Mon Mothma were his favorite this season.
During a live Q&A session on the Star Wars YouTube channel hosted by ScreenRant, Luna shared,
"For me, it was Ghorman... Ghorman and the Senate, those two episodes, because, we get to see… like the scale of the show is there. And when we executed it, you felt it, it was happening, we were crossing that plaza, the whole choreography was happening in front of your eyes... There were sometimes many cameras...There were different events you know happening at the same time, it was just incredible."
Andor Season 2, episode 8, titled ‘Who are you?’ and episode 9, titled ‘Welcome to the Rebellion,’ follows the shocking Ghorman massacre and the aftermath of it. Senator Mon Mothma finally speaks out against the Empire and publicly takes a stand with the rebellion. The highly charged episodes have been two of the best-rated episodes of the series. Both the episodes hold a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
What happened in Ghorman and the Senate?
Director Orson Krennic and his elite group of Imperial officers are secretly working on a plan to mine the planet Ghorman for the mineral called Kalkite, which will be used for the construction of the Death Star. The mining process can result in destabilization of the planet’s core.
The Empire carries out planned genocide of Ghormans while maintaining the face of legitimacy. In the episode ‘Who are you?’, the Ghormans take over the Plaza to protest. The Empire suddenly starts shooting, leading to a bloody fight between the Imperial officers and the marchers. Hundreds of Ghormans are killed violently.
Meanwhile, Senator Mon Mothma, who has been secretly funding the underground rebel movement, is taken aback by the Ghorman massacre. She boldly takes a stand in front of the Senate, the majority of whom are supportive of the Empire. She says in her speech,
“…What took place yesterday, what happened yesterday on Ghorman was unprovoked genocide. Yes, genocide! And that truth has been exiled from this chamber. And the monster screaming the loudest, the monster we've helped create, the monster who will come for us all soon enough, is Emperor Palpatine!”
The two episodes are not only the tipping point of the story but also give a political context to the entire Star Wars franchise.
Andor follows the story of the rebellion movement against the Galactic Empire. The Disney+ series is the prequel to the 2016 movie Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which is the prequel to the original Star Wars film. The series is created by Tony Gilroy.
