FX's sitcom It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17, starring Danny DeVito and Charlie Day, premiered with two episodes on July 9, 2025. Created by Rob Mac, this long-running sitcom delves into the lives of a group of self-centred friends who run Paddy's Pub in Philadelphia.

Season 17 kicks off with an Abbott Elementary crossover and a coma twist no one asked for, and somehow, it all works. Wildly inappropriate and delightfully unpredictable, this series finds fresh depravity in the double premiere titled The Gang F**s Up Abbott Elementary and Frank is in a Coma.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 and Abbot Elementary crossover was wild

The crossover that started on ABC's Abbott Elementary comes crashing into FX territory. The episode opens with Ava, the principal of Abbott Elementary, sharing that the documentary crew found footage of the Paddy Gang's visit to Abbott Elementary for volunteer work.

But the gang's up to no good. From Frank plotting to steal the school's copper wires and Dennis making a pH-balanced coffee—to Frank pissing in a school locker and Charlie starting a wild geopolitical discussion—the gang wastes no time proving that community service was a terrible idea.

Dee finds a new nemesis in Janine, who wastes no time calling her a total f**** c***. On the other hand, Charlie and Dennis start to shoot a music video. What was supposed to be a performance of an updated version of Billy Joel's We Didn't Start the Fire turns into a complete disaster. The final blow? Fall Out Boy had already recorded an update to the song.

The episode ends with the Sunny gang releasing the music video. While Dennis gifts a new espresso machine to the Abbott Elementary staff, Frank takes the chance to rip the copper wires from the school. Wild... isn't it?

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 Episode 2 leans into emotional territory. After a joke about Frank dying goes too far, the gang believes he's in a coma. Dee's stuck playing nurse, cycling through five stages of grief. There's even a strange subplot involving a Brazilian butt lift as emotional therapy.

But it all builds to the most Sunny twist imaginable: Frank was never in a coma. He faked it. The body in bed? A hyperrealistic cake, inspired by Netflix's Is It Cake. You can't make this stuff up. But Sunny can—and did.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 Episodes 1 and 2 recap: The Liberty Ball chaos

Frank's supposed death became a catalyst for Mac, Charlie, and Dennis to chase a new grift: turning Paddy's into a Starbucks for dive bars. Their fundraising route? Crashing a high-society gala (the Liberty Ball) where they're mistaken for staff. Enter Simon, played with cocaine-fueled charm—he offers sympathy, stimulants, and an invitation to his private party—which naturally ends up in a crack den. The gang's capitalist dreams implode before they begin.

Season 17 proves It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia hasn't lost its charm—it's just evolved into a new form of idiocy. With a network crossover, coma cake con, and a drug-fueled investor pitch, the show barrels into new territory without losing what makes it great: characters too dumb to succeed, too selfish to change, and too funny to ignore.
