Halloween season has officially started with the horrifying It: Welcome to Derry premiere on HBO. With its debut, the eight-episode horror series has promised more blood, gore, and fear than this franchise has ever seen before. Set in 1962, the series is a prequel to the 2017 and 2019 It films from Andy Muschietti. His decision to switch to the series format, it appears, has been accompanied by increased intensity in every aspect of horror.

In a recent conversation with Entertainment Tonight, creators Andy and Barbara Muschietti discussed the absolute bloodbath of a premiere episode. Barbara even went on to refer to it as their "Red Wedding," a significant Game of Thrones reference.

To understand why the premiere episode of It: Welcome to Derry was compared to a Game of Thrones episode, keep reading.

What is the Red Wedding reference from Game of Thrones?

The term "Red Wedding" generally refers to a shocking turn of events that ends in a brutal bloodbath, especially during a celebration. The phrase refers to the brutal massacre at the wedding feast of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey at the Twins. It turned into a bloody slaughter after Walder Frey orchestrated the deaths of Robb Stark, his mother Catelyn, and his 3,500 soldiers.

The shocking turn of events in this wedding, now known as the "Red Wedding," has since become a defining moment in popular culture. Barbara Muschietti, referring to the pilot episode of It: Welcome to Derry, calls it their version of a "Red Wedding" in her conversation with Entertainment Tonight.

"We love it. It's our Red Wedding."

The shocking turn of events in the pilot episode is meant to shake the solid ground under the audience's feet, making it clear that nothing and nobody is safe in the town of Derry now.

Barbara Muschietti's Game of Thrones comparison to the pilot episode of It: Welcome to Derry might not be too far off. Prior to this bloody premiere, the teasers and trailers that had been released made it appear that a new group of kids was set to be the new Loser Gang to face off against the monster.

The pilot starts off with a young boy named Matty being killed by "It" after he falls for the monster's disguise. Some years later, Matty's friends, a group of five kids, set out to investigate his death. The promotional materials for It: Welcome to Derry showed these kids as an important part of the mystery. However, to the shock of the audience, by the end of the episode, the majority of this gang is killed at the hands of the monster.

Creators Andy and Barbara Muschietti managed to evoke a false sense of security around the kids' lives, only to yank it away from the audience by the end of the pilot episode. Director Andy Muschietti admits to this deliberate attempt:

"This is strategically a devastating event to set the audience into that sense of 'nothing is safe in this world.' We kind of trick the audience into thinking that these are the new Losers. Well, guess what? I guess they're all dead."

Most devout Game of Thrones fans would argue that achieving the Red Wedding level of shock took the series more than a few seasons. Those seasons allowed the audience to know and understand the characters before watching them be brutally and shockingly killed. So, comparing the It: Welcome to Derry pilot to Game of Thrones might be a little off-kilter.
