IT: Welcome to Derry showrunners Jason Fuchs and Brad Calen Kane on the clown of episode 3
For a series that comes with a distinct focus on Pennywise, the clown, IT: Welcome to Derry is definitely taking its sweet time to make its big reveal of the clown. Three episodes went by without any proper visuals of the clown. However, the third episode of IT: Welcome to Derry gives us a glimpse of a clown while the children are developing the photo.
With a layer of horror, he admits that the picture is of a “clown”. The episode ends with this cliffhanger without any proper explanation about it. When the showrunners of the series are asked about the clown in the third episode of the series, their answers are quite cryptic. “We think it is”, Kane adds; however, after some moments, he also adds that the clown “might not be Pennywise”.
He definitely does not give any clear answers, which could be an indication that the clown that we see at the end of the third episode is actually Pennywise. Rather, he adds another layer of confusion to it by saying that the viewers “should go in thinking that” it is Pennywise because the latter half of the season will be filled with some intense moments.

Fuchs also adds to the confusion, saying that he thinks “it’s Pennywise, don’t you?” Both the showrunners' words definitely add a layer of intrigue to the storyline. It cannot be denied that the elements of horror in IT: Welcome to Derry are not for the faint-hearted. Besides the jump scares, there is also a distinct level of tension.
This aspect enhances the element of psychological horror. From the very first episode, the level of creativity in depicting the horror elements in the series is truly worth appreciating. The fact that Pennywise is yet to arrive in the series adds to the anticipation. It makes us wonder how much more gruesome the elements of horror are going to get this season.
The showrunners also have some insights regarding this. Kane admits that they did not want the series to “feel less horrific”. So, they had to take it up a notch. Their goal is to make the series as “scary as possible” and “make the fears that much higher”.
IT: Welcome to Derry will have a distinct focus on the reason that IT chooses to keep coming back, taking the “form of Pennywise the Dancing Clown”.There will also be a description of the element that “draws” IT to this form. There are “hints and suggestions” in the books, but the visual depiction of these elements in the series will definitely be breathtaking to watch.
