The nightmare in Derry has begun again. HBO's It: Welcome to Derry doesn't just revive Stephen King's chilling universe but expands it. Developed by the trio Andy Muschietti, Jason Fuchs, and Barbara Muschietti, this series is a prequel to the It movies. The premiere episode dives deep into Derry's past, drawing on King's interludes and haunting mythology to reveal how the horror began.
Speaking to Variety, the creators teased a three-season arc for It: Welcome to Derry, a hint that it will be different from the It franchise movies. For instance, Season 1 will delve into the prequel sequence of It: Chapter One (2017). It will take viewers 25 years back, when the people of Derry strive to uncover the origins of the infamous Pennywise the Clown.
Here's what co-creator Andy revealed about the story arc of the series:
"Our big story arc involve three seasons, which is mainly based on the three critical cycles of Pennywise, which are 1962, 1935 and 1908."
It: Welcome to Derry Episode 1: A quick recap
The premiere episode of It: Welcome to Derry opens in 1962, 25 years before the Losers' Club faced Pennywise. The episode starts in a local movie theatre, where young Matty Clements sneaks in to watch The Music Man. It's a charming scene that turns sinister in seconds. After Matty gets caught, he walks out.
What follows next is a grotesque sequence that instantly defines the series' tone. The seemingly friendly family who picks him up soon descends into madness, chanting cryptic words before the mother gives birth to a monstrous, demonic baby who starts flying. It attacks Matty. In true It fashion, innocence is shattered in moments, and Matty's candy dummy falls into the sewers.
Four months pass by, and the town tries to return to its eerie normalcy. Major Leroy Hanlon arrives from Korea. Beneath that patriotic veneer, something unnatural brews. The major senses that too. The whispers, the strange warehouse marked for Special Projects, and the unspoken tension hint at something uncanny.
Elsewhere, three kids, Teddy Uris, his friend Phil (his sister accompanies them too), and the troubled Lilie, start digging into Matty's disappearance. It turns out Lilie has a traumatic past, and she insists that she's hearing Matty's voice from the pipes. Her grief twists into something supernatural. The boys don't believe her, at least not until Teddy's own nightmares begin. His lampshade turns to human skin, and the shadows in his room whisper.
They team up to search for Matty. They meet Ronnie, a kind projectionist who once helped Matty hide. She replays The Music Man. As the film rolls, Matty appears inside the screen, holding the demonic baby. The creature bursts out of the screen, leaving only Lilie and Ronnie alive.
Derry's dark pulse
The first episode of It: Welcome to Derry doesn't rely simply on nostalgia. The cold open alone is nightmare fuel, a blend of terror and shocking gore. The mutant baby sequence is bizarre and unforgettable, a disturbing metaphor for Derry's rebirth of evil.
The social rot is evident too. Meanwhile, Major Hanlon's story explores racism in the small town. Each eerie whisper hints at something uncanny. The turtle symbols scattered throughout suggest that King's larger mythology might come into play.
