HBO's It: Welcome to Derry Episode 4 'The Great Swirling Apparatus of Our Planet's Function' was one of the most exciting hours from the horror prequel series, which expanded Stephen King's It universe like never before. While the previous two It movies introduced us to the creepy supernatural entity Pennywise, the prequel series finally expanded on the creature's origin story.

After General Shaw realized that Taniel and the Shokopiwah tribe likely know about the entity's origins and location, he ordered Dick Hallorann to use his 'Shining' abilities to uncover the truth. Hallorann then went inside Taniel's memories and discovered humans' first brush with Pennywise. He learned that the tribal people called him 'The Galloo' and used shards from a cosmic star to capture him inside the Western Wood area.

While the Shokopiwah storyline is an important part of King's original narrative, it was barely adapted in the It movies. But now with It: Welcome to Derry, we are given a fascinating peek inside the entity's origin lore, confirming that It is even older than the first human.

Here is Pennywise's origin story from It: Welcome to Derry.

It: Welcome to Derry Episode 4 finally reveals Pennywise's origin story

The latest entry in It: Welcome to Derry finally expanded on Pennywise's supernatural lore. Dick Hallorann used his 'Shining' abilities to go into Taniel's memories to learn more about the supernatural entity. Since Taniel was not cooperative with the military and refused to pass on any information about It, Hallorann had to use his powers as a last resort.

The final segment in It: Welcome to Derry Episode 4 saw Hallorann get inside Taniel's mind, particularly to one memory when he was a child and was narrating about the entity's origins to his aunt, Rose.

It was revealed that the supernatural being is an 'evil spirit' and was trapped inside a star for millions of years. However, he was freed from his cosmic restraints when the star crash-landed on Earth, thus beginning his reign of terror in Derry. Since the entity crash-landed on Earth even before humans, it was a while before it first encountered Taniel's 'first ancestors.' The humans realized how the cosmic star is Galloo's weakness and used its broken shards to fashion daggers that could weaken It.

It: Welcome to Derry Episode 4 also revealed how humans learned to live in harmony with It, leaving the Western Wood area for him. However, all this changed when settlers arrived and, without paying any heed to the Shokopiwah tribe's warning, entered the restricted area and met their deaths at the hands of Galloo. This was certainly a turning point in the lore as the entity became powerful, even becoming immune to the dagger fashioned from the star's shards.

Left with no choice, the Shokopiwah tribe had to leave that land. However, one young girl, Necani, did not want to leave her ancestral land and thus sneaked into the Western Wood area to gather more shards from the cosmic star. While Necani's bravery was impressive, it was fatal. As It: Welcome to Derry Episode 4 further revealed, the entity killed Necani's mother and some other villagers, who went in search of the young girl.

While Necani's mother's death was truly tragic for the young girl, she fulfilled her mission and finally found all (thirteen) shards of the cosmic star that could weaken It.

The final part of young Taniel's story revealed how Necani and the others used those thirteen shards as restraints, burying them across the boundary of Western Wood and thus capturing the entity inside. This also explains why It was unable to follow Young Francis and Rose in the flashback from It: Welcome to Derry Episode 3. This is another reason why the Shokopiwah tribe does not want General Francis and the military to dig on those marked places, as it could unleash and free the monster.

Pennywise's origin lore was one of the defining moments of It: Welcome to Derry Episode 4. However, now that Dick Hallorann is aware of the location of the pillars guarding It, he will likely reveal them to General Shaw, threatening its freedom.
