The first official trailer for It: Welcome to Derry has been released, and it looks as menacing as the film series. The prequel show, which is slated to premiere on HBO this year, delves into the backstory of Pennywise the Clown.
The trailer teases Pennywise’s return, showing the otherworldly killer in clown form walking through a sewer. The show is set in the 1960s in the fictional town of Derry, where several children have reported hearing scary noises from pipes.
The supernatural horror series is set years before the events of the 2017 film It. The movie’s director, Andy Muschietti, has developed It: Welcome to Derry along with Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs.
It: Welcome to Derry trailer showcases Pennywise’s terror in 1960s Maine
HBO dropped the trailer for It: Welcome to Derry on May 25, 2025. The footage opens with a horrified child hitchhiking on a gloomy road, where a couple picks him up and asks about his whereabouts. The kid replies that they could take him anywhere but Derry.
The trailer then announces the setting of the show as 1962 Maine, where a family has recently moved to the town of Derry and senses a coldness in people. Children have been going missing in the town for months without a trace, and a group of kids begins to hear eerie voices coming from their bathroom sinks.
There are visuals of drowning and bloodshed, which suggest that none of the kids are safe. Meanwhile, a man scares them with an unsettling grin on his face, and even the police refuse to help them. As mayhem continues in Derry, Pennywise appears in the shadows, moving through a sewer.
Bill Skarsgård is reprising his role as Pennywise the Clown from the film series in It: Welcome to Derry. Though the actor was initially apprehensive about playing the role in a television show, he agreed due to the involvement of Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti in the project. Skarsgård revealed during an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast:
“I did feel I was kind of over it and wanted to do different things. The Pennywise thing as well, I’ve been quite defined by it. Like, that’s 26-year-old me, I’m not still a young man .. [but the Muschettis are] very close friends. Family, even. I’m the godfather of his son. I love them. So, alright, let’s bring him back.”
The rest of the cast in the show includes Jovan Adepo, Taylour Paige, James Remar, Chris Chalk, and Stephen Rider. Based on Stephen King’s horror novel, the series takes place 27 years before the events of the Loser Club hunting.
The show will take an unconventional storytelling approach; instead of following a linear format, the creators have decided to base the first season in 1962, and then go backward to 1935 and 1908 for the potential second and third seasons.
It: Welcome to Derry will premiere on HBO and HBO Max this fall, but its exact release date remains to be announced.
