The freaky season of horror is here, and the premiere date for IT: Welcome to Derry also inches closer than ever. The horror series is a prequel aiming to explore the origin of the Stephen King monster, Pennywise the Clown, in Derry, Maine, and is set in 1962.
As fans rally up for the IT: Welcome to Derry release, the creators behind the show have revealed some really interesting details about the upcoming shows. While the prequel to It is not based on a Stephen King novel, it has the author's stamp of approval, who recently took to his Threads and said:
"WELCOME TO DERRY is amazing. First episode is terrifying"
A note of goodwill from the author himself goes a long way in speaking of the show's excellence. However, as we prepare for the first episode's premiere on October 26, the trailer for IT: Welcome to Derry revealed some really interesting crossovers with the Stephen King "multiverse," and recent comments from the creators only show that these crossovers will be important to the series' plot as well.
Keep reading to find out why the crossovers into other Stephen King worlds are crucial to the upcoming show's plot.
IT: Welcome to Derry creators on how the show crossovers with other Stephen King worlds
The IT: Welcome to Derry trailer was revealed a few weeks ago, and fans were quick to notice some particular callbacks in it. From The Shawshank Redemption callback with the Shawshank State Prison bus to The Shining callback, the trailer is replete with crossovers into other Stephen King worlds.
IT: Welcome to Derry and The Shawshank Redemption

While The Shawshank Redemption link was a small one with a prison bus of the Shawshank State Prison, the link to The Shining was more than just a callback. Talking about the bus that we see in the trailer, creators Andy and Barbara Muschietti signaled that there might be some more links to the iconic film in the upcoming series:
"Shawshank is like, there's a character who is sent to prison, wrongfully accused, of course, in this world, and he is sent to Shawshank. Does he arrive to Shawshank?"
Andy Muschietti also teases the prison's role in the series by posing an interesting question:
"[If the character] was in Shawshank at that point of history he would have met Andy Dufresne and Red, but the question is does he arrive to Shawshank?"
IT: Welcome to Derry and The Shining
The Shawshank Redemption crossover is hinted at with a bus, but for The Shining, one of the major characters in IT: Welcome to Derry is from the world of The Shining.
Chris Chalk plays Dick Halloran on the series, a character whose power of shining made him a victim as well as a hero in The Shining is a huge character in the upcoming prequel. He appears in the official trailer multiple times and is a chef at The Black Spot in the show. This character might even be one of the major links to understanding the monster's history and its origins.
Referring to the crossover, Andy Muschietti commented:
"Yes, yes. We can say, like Dick Halloran is you know, we all know from the book, or people that read the book, that Dick Halloran was in the Black Spot. Chris Chalk, who plays Dick Halloran, did an incredible job. But the Dick Halloran character is an important character in our series."
These crossovers between the different Stephen King worlds are sure to be a treat for anybody who loves the books or the movies that have been adapted from the author's works, while creating a much bigger mythology for the upcoming series to explore.
