It: Welcome To Derry, the supernatural horror series based on Stephen King's novel It, will be released on HBO on October 26, 2025. It serves as a prequel to the two It films, It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019). It: Welcome To Derry follows a couple and their son as they arrive at the mysterious town of Derry, Maine, in the early 1960s. Just before they arrived, a young boy had gone missing, and things only got worse after this new family arrived.
One can only dare to imagine how horrifying the show is going to be, given how chilling the films were. The creators of the show, Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti, have recently said that It: Welcome to Derry will serve a
"graphic and shocking conclusion"
Andy and Barbara Muschietti on HBO's It: Welcome To Derry's ending
While we do know that It: Welcome To Derry is a prequel to the It films, its ending can be something very unexpected. Since the ending of the show doesn't necessarily have to immediately be followed up by the films' story, the ending can literally be anything. In a conversation with Deadline, Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti, co-creators of the show, spoke about the show and its ending. Andy said,
"We wanted to raise the bar higher in terms of shock value,”
He continued,
“It’s about a self-imposed mandate of opening with an event that is shocking enough that you put the audience in a position where nothing is taken for granted, where nothing is safe in this world. You’re immediately putting people on the edge of the seat. We needed a strong opening. One of the things I love about this scene is the build-up. Of course, it has a big, graphic and shocking conclusion, but the build-up is something that was important.”
Thus, we can not only expect the ending to be unexpected, something that will shock us, but also a build-up that'll make the ending even more anticipated. While we don't know exactly how the show will end, Andy Muschietti did reveal their plans for the ending and how that'll help them create more seasons. As Andy said to Deadline,
“There is an intentional bigger arc that will open,”
He continued,
“My intention with this was to create a story that is a little bit like an iceberg under the water all through Seasons 1, 2 and 3. There will be an expansion in the mythology and more answers to the big questions. The second season will be in 1935. At the end of Season 1, we are hinting at the reason why we are going to tell the story in two more seasons and backwards.”
As Andy said, the creators are aiming to tell the complete story of Derry and how Pennywise the Clown came to be, across three seasons. Except, we won't be seeing the story from its origin; we'll be going back in time with each season.
It: Welcome To Derry will be released on HBO on October 26, 2025.
