It: Welcome to Derry may already be planning for a second season, even though the first season has not yet aired. News suggests that the show has been renewed behind closed doors, with production on season 2 set to start in March 2026.

This makes sense given the show's overall structure, as it has been built as an ongoing multiseason narrative tracing Pennywise's history throughout various ages of the town of Derry.

The first season will be released in October 2025 on HBO and will be a prequel to the It films. It will be about the 1960s, years before the 2017 film timeline. The story will follow the early beginnings of Pennywise the Clown and how his influence started altering the haunted town.

Since the series was conceived as a long-form show, the early renewal is a sign that the showrunners will get to tell the entire mythology in full across several seasons.

Planned story and season format for It: Welcome to Derry

It: Welcome to Derry has been laid out as a three-season arc spanning different eras of history. Season 1 is in 1962 and reveals the first chapter of Pennywise's horror and how it affects the individuals residing in Derry during this era.

Season 2 will be further turned back to 1935, and the time of brutal social strife and occurrences that lay further foundation as to how and why fear sustains the power of Pennywise. It: Welcome to Derry Season 3 will go back even further, to 1908, to find the deepest layers of the creature's existence in town.

This reverse chronological narrative style reflects the notion that Derry's history is constructed in terms of recurring cycles of terror and devastation. Tracking these occurrences across various generations, the series attempts to present an exhaustive timeline of Pennywise's domination.

Each year takes on unique characters and historical settings, but ties in with the overall mythology set in the initial work.

Production updates and casting

Season 1 of It: Welcome to Derry contains nine episodes and takes place in the 1960s. Production took place mostly in Port Hope, Ontario, which was already used as a stand-in for Derry, Maine. Production in 2023 was interrupted by the industry-wide strikes, delaying the premiere from 2024 to 2025.

The show is produced by HBO, with Andy and Barbara Muschietti as executive producers, following their efforts from the It films. Jovan Adepo plays Pennywise, continuing the character's design from the previous films. The series also creates new characters that are meant to reflect the various communities of Derry from the 1960s and connect them to the broader narrative of the town's repeated tragedies.

There are reports that It: Welcome to Derry season 2 will go on the floor in March 2026, which means that the production schedule is being coordinated so that future seasons will come out at regular intervals. If this pace is sustained, season 2 may release in late 2026 or early 2027.

Release plans and renewal prospects

It: Welcome to Derry Season 1 will be released in October 2025, timed to coincide with the Halloween season. Promos for the series have centered on welcoming viewers to a new era in Derry's history, with teasers emphasizing the 1960s time period and flashbacks to Pennywise's previous iteration.

Though HBO has not issued any public statement regarding the second season, the apparent production timeline and three-season plan of the show have raised hopes that there are already more episodes in development.

The planned approach implies that the narrative is designed to progress in steps, with the addition of new layers to the origins of Pennywise and the events that forged the town's culture of terror in each subsequent season.

The method enables the series to build upon the initial history in a manner that bridges the past to the present, providing a greater perspective on how Derry evolved into the backdrop for the events of the films.
