The final season of Stranger Things has been in the works for nearly three years, so for the Duffer brothers to finally give over the series finale and let the show go after more than a decade was certainly a big deal. Setting a story out into the world, one that has just been theirs for so long, has been hard for the Duffer brothers.

In a recent conversation with Variety after Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2 was released, the Duffer brothers opened up about everything that can be expected in the finale and how they would still work on it if they could.

Stranger Things premiered in 2015, and since then, the Duffer brothers have been completely entrenched in everything that is the Netflix blockbuster. As creators, executive producers, directors, as well as writers, Stranger Things is their baby, so to speak. Now that we're at the end of the show, it's harder than expected for them to let go of it and send it out into the world.

In a recent conversation with Variety, the Duffer brothers confirmed that they had indeed finished work on the season finale a week ago, and it was "yanked away" from them. They added that it was actually an emotional experience for them, and if given the chance, they'd still work on it for another year. Matt Duffer said:

"It’s a weird feeling. We finished last week — or it was yanked away from us last week. I mean, we would be working on it for another year if we could. It feels very odd. But on the other hand, we’ve been working on it for three years, and it felt right — the right time to let it go. And we’re just excited for people to finally see it."

Nevertheless, the Stranger Things series finale will soon be out in the world for all to see and experience. The brothers also explained that apart from the final fight against Vecna, the Upside Down, the Abyss, and the Mind Flayer, the final episode would also wrap up the two emotional lines that are yet to be resolved.

"It was really important for us that all of our characters, as they head into the final battle, have really resolved those tensions or conflicts."

The first being Kali convincing Eleven that she needed to sacrifice herself in order to end the never-ending cycle of her blood being used by the government. The second is Henry's backstory, a part of which was seen in the sixth episode of Season 5, Escape from Camazotz, just before Max and Holly exit the cave.

"The Eleven one is sort of the big outstanding issue that has not been resolved going in finale.....Henry’s backstory specifically, and his connection to the Mind Flayer. So those are the two areas that I think are the most revelatory or impactful as we move into the final episode."

So, in the final episode of Stranger Things, as the party fights to defeat the forces against Hawkins, the Duffer brothers have revealed that these plots can be expected to be resolved as well.

Stranger Things Season 5 is set to premiere on December 31, 2025, on Netflix and in select theaters.
