“It’s even better”: Kathy Bates hypes up Matlock Season 2 after Season 1’s cliffhanger ending

Matlock has turned out to be a major success for CBS. When the first season of the revival series aired from September 2024 to April 2025, audiences tuned in every week to see how Matty finds the culprits of her daughter’s death while pretending to be a friendly and widowed lawyer.

At the end of the first season came the reveal that the WellBrexa documents were hidden by Julian Markston, the senior partner at Jacobson Moore. Series lead Kathy Bates has talked about how the cliffhanger ending will be followed up in Matlock Season 2.

Teasing how the sophomore installment will be even more interesting than the first season, the actress said in a recent interview with US Magazine:

“[Hopefully] people will think it’s even better than the first season.”

Apart from the WellBrexa reveal, the Matlock Season 1 finale also brought Matty face-to-face with her grandson Alfie’s biological father, played by Niko Nicotera. Talking about how she is excited about the plot unfolding in Season 2, Kathy Bates said:

“I’m really excited about that for a lot of reasons. I worked with him [Nicotera] on Richard Jewell. That last scene [on Matlock], I’ve just been waiting for and waiting for it to happen. I love working with him because he’s really scary and you don’t know which way that relationship is going to go.”

Skye P. Marshall, who plays Olympia in Matlock, was also present during the interview and said even she could not guess that her character’s estranged husband was going to be revealed as the culprit:

“I genuinely couldn’t guess. That’s what makes their writing so phenomenal because [showrunner] Jennie always says, ‘Can any of us figure it out in the writers’ room?’ And if one person can, she makes it harder or makes the twists smarter. So that’s why the audience was always on the edge of their seat at the end of every episode.”

The show is a revival of the 1980s CBS legal drama of the same name and revolves around Matty, a retired lawyer who starts working at a law firm that she believes was responsible for causing an opioid crisis that eventually killed her daughter.

At the end of Season 1, Olympia finds out about Julian being the offender but is torn between whether she should tell Matty about it or keep it a secret to protect her estranged husband.
