The Peacemaker season 2 finale was supposed to hint at the longer narratives that are set to evolve in the DC Universe as planned by James Gunn. Fans had arrived at many conclusions after the finale premiere, some hinting at the possible major villains. However, Gunn just threw all of these theories for a spin after a recent conversation with New Rockstars and Screen Crush.

The final episode of Peacemaker Season 2 found Rick Flag Sr. using the 11th Street Kids and other agents to find a new Earth-like dimension and using it to function as a prison for metahuman criminals. The reveal that shook all the theorizing DCU fans into action was that this planet was named "Salvation." Assuming that the name drew inspiration from a comic series in the DC Universe, fans thought they had all but figured out Gunn's plan for the Universe.

Well, after the recent conversation with Gunn, they might need to think again.

Why did the Peacemaker Season 2 finale spark Salvation Run theories?

The Peacemaker Season 2 finale found two new institutes established. On one side, the 11th Street Kids had come together to create their own peacekeeping agency called Checkmate. On the other side, Rick Flag Sr. named the new habitable dimension 'Salvation,' which he would use as a prison for the metahuman prisoners.

The name 'Salvation' sparked a lot of theorizing online about James Gunn's plans for the DC Universe, as the name seemed inspired by the Salvation Run comic series. In this series, the U.S. government also tasks the Suicide Squad and Amanda Waller with sending metahuman villains to a different planet, leading to parallels being drawn.

The Salvation Run comic series finally led to the Final Crisis storyline, where one of the biggest DCU villains, Darkseid, in his attempts to conquer the universe, tries to get the Anti-Life equation and goes on a killing spree. After the Peacemaker Season 2 reveal of the 'Salvation' dimension, theories suggested that Gunn was planning to head a story that would lead to the Final Crisis storyline with Darkseid as the overarching antagonist.

However similar the parallels between Salvation Run and Peacemaker Season 2 appeared, James Gunn, who has always been candid as a studio head, revealed that at the moment, he had no plans to bring up Darkseid as the big bad villain, and all the Salvation Run theories were sadly incorrect.

"There are aspects of Darkseid, as in Thanos are obviously very similar. They look very similar. Because of that, using Darkseid as the big bad right now is not necessarily the thing. For a lot of reasons, because Zack did it so cool in his own way, because Thanos and Marvel."

This debunked Peacemaker Season 2 can be considered good news in a way, because having the DCU move towards Darkseid so soon after his feature by Zack Snyder on the big screen would, in a way, be a disservice to the fresh storytelling that Gunn is attempting to include in the DC Universe.

Additionally, Darkseid and Thanos have many similarities in terms of their looks and their motivations. So, for the DCU to move in that direction after Marvel has capitalized on the Thanos storyline would feel like another version of the same story.

Every new project from Gunn shepherding the DCU does seem to point to a much more vibrant and fresh storytelling future for the universe, and this debunked theory is just another example that the DC Universe is in good hands.
