Everyone is awaiting the August 2025 release of Peacemaker season two with bated breath. Ahead of the return of DCU's anti-hero Christopher Smith, showrunner and co-chairman James Gunn spoke alongside star John Cena in an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly about what to expect from the upcoming sophomore season of Peacemaker.

While the debut season of Peacemaker was released, albeit in a different era on the old DCEU, the upcoming second season will feature several Superman cameos and will definitely tie into the larger and revamped DCU.

Apart from this, the second season will also feature a new credits sequence that is poised to match the popularity of the viral Wig Wam track from the first season. Although this new credit sequence will be made available to a larger audience at the ComicCon in July this year, Gunn claimed in the interview that the upcoming season will hold a place of special significance in the new DCU:

"I'll give you an exclusive: You get to see Eagly try to dance for the first time. So that's really something. He is not the best at it, but he tries to really join in the dance sequence at the end. He's got a little pose this time."

Here's everything that you need to know.

James Gunn and John Cena explain how Peacemaker season 2 ties in to the new DCU

The second season of Peacemaker will mark the second live-action project in the new DCU, preceded by Superman. While this is set to be an important cornerstone of the new DCU, co-chairman and showrunner James Gunn knows fully well that the second season has to match up to the popularity of the first season, although in a manner that is not bogged down in repetition. John Cena attested to this when he said:

"This time around, everybody looked at it through a different lens, knowing how much the audience enjoyed the first one. [We knew] this is going to be a cornerstone of the show, so let's dive in. Everyone gave their best in season 1, but I just think people now know the importance of it and hopefully it shines through in season 2."

Coming over to the new DCU from his previous position at Marvel, Gunn was served quite a handful in terms of upcoming projects as he assumed his position as the studio's co-chairman. The last year has been exceptionally busy for Gunn as he had to helm the production of the upcoming Superman, along with the previously released Creature Commandos. Although the workload was almost superhuman at times, and Gunn confessed that given a chance, he would never like to repeat it ever again, it also allowed him to weave a deeper bond between Peacemaker and Superman:

"As soon as I was done writing Superman, I was able to write season 2 of Peacemaker, I developed it along the way, in conjunction with the other DC projects that we're doing, so it's very much connected to Superman and it's very much connected to what comes after. I had a rough idea of what I was going to do, but it was actually quite different than what the show ended up being."

As revealed in the trailer, Peacemaker season two will feature Superman cameos from Isabela Merced's Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion's Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Sean Gunn's Maxwell Lord. Besides, it will also illustrate the use of the Quantum Unfolding Chamber or the QUC, which is described by Gunn in his own words:

"You've seen what we call the QUC, the Quantum Unfolding Chamber, in the first season of Peacemaker, and we see more about that technology in Superman. The QUC is the center of the story in Peacemaker season 2... We see a lot of different characters from Superman in the (season), (including) Isabela and Nathan and Sean, and then we see a bunch of other characters later on in the season from other parts of the DCU and from Superman. There might even be one really, really, really big cameo near the end of the show."

Riding on the success of the debut season and being confident after his victory over the Butterflies, Christopher Smith is trying his best to enlist in a team of superheroes in the second season of the show. However, he is mocked and belittled. Gunn explained the reasons behind this as:

"He's still considered a punchline among all of the other metahumans, so he's starting the season in a bad place. As are all of our heroes, all of the 11th Street kids — well, everybody but Vigilante (Freddie Stroma), who just always seems to be okay with everything."

What to expect from the second season of Peacemaker?

As revealed by Gunn, the timeline of the sophomore season is being intentionally kept vague. This is partly due to the issue that Marvel faced after clearly defining its timeline and promoting the practice of integrating every newly released title into the same year of its release in the universe. This soon resulted in a convoluted timeline because of the gap following the events of the last Avengers movie, and things were further complicated by the presence of numerous Marvel TV shows. Gunn has taken lessons from this:

"I see how difficult, after all my time at Marvel, it is to make things truly fit together, so it's [Peacemaker season 2] an unspecified amount of a couple of years."

Speaking about the metamorphosis of the titular anti-hero himself, Gunn presented his closing remarks:

"In a lot of ways, Peacemaker has changed a lot this season, He's a much softer guy, he's a much nicer guy, he's less in your face and less obnoxious and less aggressive. He has changed as a human being, so Langston Fleury actually takes up a lot of being a total asshole in the same way Peacemaker was (last season). He's a very politically incorrect asshole throughout most of the season, and also an incredibly funny guy."

Peacemaker season two is expected to release this August.
