James Gunn just handed Blue Beetle a VIP pass into the new DCU, and he said it in the same breath he used to describe Peacemaker’s smooth transition. Speaking to Rotten Tomatoes about Peacemaker season 2, Gunn explained that some existing DC-era projects don’t need a full rewrite to live on in his rebooted universe, and that Blue Beetle, played by Xolo Maridueña, “fits in very nicely” in his universe, the same way Peacemaker does.
Gunn stated,
"Peacemaker, there’s hardly anything else that you need to change for him, he can slide very easily into the DCU, same with Blue Beetle. They just kind of fit in very nicely, we just have to retcon a couple of things"
What that actually means is practical, not mystical: the Blue Beetle movie’s events can be gently retconned or ignored while keeping the character and cast, similar to how Peacemaker was folded into Gunn’s larger plan. Studios can salvage what worked, reframe what didn’t, and bring a popular hero back without redoing the whole origin story. Many have wondered if Maridueña's character would be returning under Gunn's reign, considering the number of projects the director has scrapped. But with this confirmation, it now means that fans have one more superhero to look forward to in the DCU. More details are awaited for now.
Peacemaker has now returned for a second season
Peacemaker is back, and this time his story blasts into a brand-new era of DC storytelling. Season two of the hit superhero series catapults John Cena’s jingoistic vigilante into the newly rebooted DC Universe. Unlike the first season, which spun directly out of The Suicide Squad, and still lived in the shadow of the DCEU, this second outing plants its flag firmly in James Gunn’s fresh DCU, with higher stakes, trippier twists, and even more offbeat humor.
The new season kicks off after the events of Gunn’s upcoming Superman, where Peacemaker is once again trying to gain the respect of the superhero community. Instead, he finds himself pulled into a bizarre multiversal rabbit hole. Through a mysterious “quantum chamber,” Chris stumbles into an alternate reality where his father, Auggie Smith, the White Dragon who tormented him, is not only alive, but a full-fledged superhero. Even wilder, his long-dead brother Keith is thriving as Captain Triumph. But meeting heroic versions of his family forces Chris to confront who he really is, and whether “peace at any cost” actually means anything in a universe where even your worst enemies can wear capes.
James Gunn, returning as showrunner, writes and directs all eight episodes, with a star-studded cast that includes Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., who takes the antagonist mantle with raw fury. The season doesn’t just double down on action and comedy; it digs deeper into guilt, redemption, and family, all while keeping Peacemaker’s foul-mouthed charm intact.
Peacemaker is available to stream on Disney+.
