Recently, James Gunn provided a little surprise to fans by releasing some of his initial sketches of the mysterious alien in the fourth episode of Peacemaker Season 2. He shared them on Instagram as a carousel of images that look like they're from the pages of a personal notebook: Playful, rough, and full of hasty notes.

Gunn claimed that he was sketching these as he wrote the script. That makes the post look more like an insight into his creative process than a studio update. Soon, fans and entertainment sites jumped into the buzz.

His doodles leave people with many questions as to how such a strange creature could turn into a complete design on the screen, all out of a simple thought. They also give a hint to the role of the alien in the story and display how Gunn blends comedy and a little scary fun by coming up with new monsters.

The sketches by James Gunn

James Gunn posted a fun surprise on Instagram, a carousel of brief and rough sketches of the alien in its early phases. These are not definitive designs, but rather brainstorming notes. Gunn shares that he had drawn them at the time he was writing the episode, and that is why they have a loose, vigorous style.

The sketches are not meticulously detailed; instead, they play with forms and emotions: Will the creature be friendly, funny, or scary? You know you can see various ideas in the set, some are round-headed, some have long jaws or crooked eyes. Different moods are tested in each version.

When you zoom in on the thumbnails, you will see some hints of the alien’s role on screen. James Gunn’s sketches reveal an uneven creature; one side of the body is heavier, the limbs are positioned oddly, and the eyes are not in the center. Such an imbalanced design immediately renders something uncomfortable without excessive monster tropes.

The gouged texture, the pocked skin, and the thin membranes all contribute to it appearing as a real animal, which has evolved to serve a purpose, rather than just being a haphazard adornment. Details of slugs or amphibians are also copied in some of the drawings, indicating that the alien may slide or hop. Such information assists cameramen in visualizing the movement of those aliens when filming.

An alien cameo is not meant to be a mere appearance, but it serves the purpose of narration. In the far-flung combination of crass jokes, bizarre sci-fi, and family drama of Peacemaker, a weird creature can be amusing, frightening, or a clue to what is coming next. All that can be deduced from the early sketches made by James Gunn. The design is spooky and also adaptable, and can be used as a joke or a twist to the story.

Fans simply cannot stop guessing. Immediately after the Peacemaker Episode 4 was broadcast, comment sections and social media posts were brimming with theories about the alien being related to DC gadgets such as the Quantum Unfolding Chamber and other technology discussed in the show.

The way the episode alters certain lore of the series was also noted by critics and adds to the enigma of whether this creature is just a one-time visitor or a hint at something even greater.
