Peacemaker Season 2 is three episodes in, and amidst this, the DCU grew further as James Gunn officially announced a follow-up to 2025's Superman. On Wednesday, September 3, 2025, James Gunn confirmed that the sequel featuring David Corenswet's Big Blue Boy Scout is titled Man of Tomorrow, another iconic comic book moniker.
James Gunn further hyped up the second season of the HBO Max DCU series by referring to Peacemaker as a "prequel" to Man of Tomorrow. This has fans wondering if Superman could be one of the major cameos in the final three episodes of the second season. However, as of now, David Corenswet's Man of Steel appearance has not been confirmed for the HBO Max series.
James Gunn's latest Peacemaker tease explained
On September 4, 2025, James Gunn posted on X an image from the HBO Max series along with an interesting caption:
"Watch the Man of Tomorrow Prequel AKA #Peacemaker Season 2, airing a new episode tonight on @HBOMax at 9 pm EST/6 pm PST."
This caption has fans in a frenzy because the caption suggests that the last three episodes of the second season will set up Man of Tomorrow. Thus, these three episodes can hint at Superman's trajectory over the rest of the DCU. Even James Gunn hinted at this to Brandon Davis at the Peacemaker Season 2 premiere last month:
"It could mean they're terrible [laughs]. That is one option. Or it could mean that there's a lot of major twists and turns in the last three episodes. And even though I'm sending the first five to a select few, things still get out as you know. Things got out already. You know, people who want to search can be spoiled on purpose, but I really don't want what's in those last three episodes to be spoiled. And so I'm keeping them close to the chest. I won't even let my publicist see them. That's the god's honest truth."
Rick Flag Sr. and A.R.G.U.S. are surveilling Christopher for using the QUC, i.e., Quantum Unfolding Chamber, in his home. We saw the QUC for the first time in the first season of the HBO Max series headlined by John Cena's Christopher Smith. But it played a key role in Superman, as Lex Luthor used the QUC to imprison all of his enemies.
The QUC tore Metropolis apart in the third act of Superman, and Rick Flag Sr. is using the QUC to imprison Christopher Smith as revenge for killing his son, Rick Flag Jr., in 2021's The Suicide Squad. The weeks ahead footage also teased Flg Sr. meeting a mysterious prisoner in Belle Reve. The internet is swarmed with rumors that this mysterious prisoner is either Lex Luthor or Sydney Happersen, setting up the sequel.
In the same premiere, John Cena teased how the ongoing season ties into the wider DCU. According to him, Season 2:
“Is about furthering the narrative. Instead of stand-alone properties, all of the DCU is now connected, as you saw Peacemaker show up in Superman. I think what you see in season two is just a forward of that narrative. That whole DCU throughline — it takes the 11th Street Kids through their next adventure, but it also has a lot to do with the DCU going forward.”
Is the second season really setting up the wider DCU?
Given James Gunn's latest tease, it looks like the current season of the John Cena-led DCU HBO Max series is setting up Man of Tomorrow and probably the rest of the DCU. Gunn hinted at this last month, as the DC Studios co-CEO said this to The Hollywood Reporter at the red carpet premiere of the DC show:
“It’s a big part, definitely Superman leads directly into Peacemaker; it should be noted that this is for adults, not for children, but Superman leads into this show and then we have the setting up of all of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker, it’s incredibly important. Lots of guest stars coming up, lots of characters that are showing up that we’ve already met in Superman. I don’t think there’s anything that I’ve ever done that I love more than this season of Peacemaker, so I’m so excited for people to see it.”
While the final three episodes may set up Man of Tomorrow, we probably will have to wait a while to learn about the story of the sequel.
