Arrested Development was a sitcom that aired on Fox from 2003 to 2006 and then streamed on Netflix from 2013 to 2019. The show ran for five seasons and followed the dysfunctional Bluth family, who used to be wealthy. Jason Bateman starred as Michael Bluth, one of the protagonists of the show.
An Arrested Development film was in the works and set to be made, but was ultimately cancelled. The film would follow the Buth family supervising a film being made about their lives. In a recent conversation with Hot Ones, Jason Bateman revealed who would've starred in the film if it were made.
Who could've been in the cast of the Arrested Development film, revealed by Jason Bateman
While Arrested Development aired quite some time back, the show is still considered to be one of the most successful and popular sitcoms of American television. The show has won several accolades, such as six Primetime Emmy Awards and one Golden Globe Award. Despite that, a film about the show was cancelled after discussions about the cast and story had already taken place.
Jason Bateman was recently a guest on Hot Ones, hosted by Sean Evans. The actor took on the Hot Ones challenge and answered Evans' questions as he made his way through the spicy wings. Almost at the end of the episode, Evans asked Bateman who else, other than Matt Damon as Michael Bluth, could have been part of the Arrested Development film if it were made. Bateman responded, saying,
"The other casting would've been Dr. Phil for George Senior. Will Ferrell was I think talking to Arnett about Gob. Jonah Hill was going to maybe do Michael Cera's part because I think they were hanging out from Superbad."
The film would follow the Bluths, looking at a film getting made about them, and in that film, as Bateman said, Dr. Phil, the American television personality, would play George Sr., originally played by Jeffrey Tambor. Will Ferrell would've played Gob as he was talking to Will Arnett, who played Gob Bluth in the show. Jonah Hill would've played George Michael Bluth, who was played by Michael Cera in the show.
This lineup of actors for an Arrested Development film sounds interesting, as it includes actors who are known for their work in comedy. Besides, Dr. Phil is known mostly for his reality show and for playing himself in several projects. Thus, seeing him play George Senior would've been a fresh experience. But unfortunately, the film isn't happening.
Other than Bateman, Tambor, Arnett, and Cera, the show starred Portia de Rossi as Lindsay Bluth-Fünke, Alia Shawkat as Maeby Fünke, Tony Hale as Buster Bluth, David Cross as Tobias Fünke, and Jessica Walter as Lucille Bluth. The show was created by Mitchell Hurwitz and narrated by Ron Howard, who was also an executive producer on the show along with Brian Grazer, David Nevins, Mitchell Hurwitz, Jim Vallely, and Troy Miller.
While the film is not happening, you can still stream the show Arrested Development on Netflix.
