Countdown finally wrapped up its premiere season last week with a banger cliffhanger. If we thought Todd forcing a dog to run while aiming a gun at him was terrifying, his forming the same parallel with Oliveras in the season finale was a punch in the gut. The task force is still trying to figure out Oliveras's absence, and when they find out that Todd kidnapped her, all hell might break loose.
If Todd actually ends up shooting or hurting Oliveras, we might get to witness a side of Meechum that has never been seen before. To actually find out what happens next, we do have to wait for a renewal of Countdown for Season 2, and the rumors surrounding the renewal are not all good.
However, even though there are rumors that the Prime Video drama will not be renewed for another season, the Jensen Ackles-led show continues to top the charts.
Prime Video drama Countdown tops viewership charts despite uncertainty around renewal

Countdown Season 1 ended with the biggest cliffhanger of them all, with Oliveras's life hanging in the balance. Will the task force be able to get to her, or will she have to run for her life? Since the procedural's premiere in June 2025, it has continued to top the charts for the streaming giant Amazon. During the time that the season ran, it was always among the top 5 watched shows and cracked the top 3 as well on multiple occasions.
At the time of writing, Countdown continues to top the viewership charts for Prime Video with only two shows ahead of it, namely The Summer I Turned Pretty and The Terminal List: Dark Wolf. Considering the viewership, it should be a no-brainer for Prime Video to renew the Jensen Ackles-led crime drama for another season.
However, if other factors, such as critical reception, are considered, Countdown's future is not looking bright. The procedural has continued to receive bland reviews ever since it premiered, with many critics calling it dull, generic, and bad TV. The show has only managed to gather an aggregate score of 35% on the review score aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
The dichotomy of high viewership and low critical scores has led to an uncertainty around the show's fate. Additionally, the fact that it has been a week since the finale premiered, and we have yet to receive an update on renewal, does not bode well for the future.
Derek Haas, when asked about the prospects for a renewal, was mostly hopeful and positive:
"I’m feeling good. I haven’t done streaming before, so kind of all of the analytics are new. It’s different from when I was doing network and you knew the next morning, like, oh, this is doing great, whatever. But I’m excited because it feels like we continue to pick up viewers every week and so that gets me all excited."
Countdown might be having a hard time with critical reception, but its out-of-the-roof viewership numbers continue to instill some hope for a Season 2 renewal.
