Created by Derek Haas, Countdown, is a crime drama series that is also written by Haas. Featuring Jensen Ackles, Violett Beane, Eric Dane, and others, the show has one season and released recently on Amazon Prime Video on June 25, 2025.
The show follows Detective Mark Meachum (Ackles), who is from the Los Angeles Police Department. After a Department of Homeland Security officer is killed, Meachum is brought in and made to join a covert task force with other undercover agents from various law enforcement agencies to track down the murderer.
However, the show reveals that there is a much bigger conspiracy at hand and Meachum must race against time to save millions of people from an imminent threat.
While Countdown has received mixed reviews, it stayed on the top two positions of Amazon Prime Video’s streaming charts. However, with the entry of another thriller, Butterfly, the Ackles-starrer show has dropped from the top spot. Here are the details.
Countdown loses its top position to Butterfly at the Amazon Prime Video’s streaming charts

The Ackles-starrer series has dominated the streaming numbers at Amazon Prime Video, even if the reviews were not so favorable. With popular actor Jensen Ackles at the helm, the series was bound to work well. However, the show has dipped in popularity after another show from the same genre, Butterfly, made an entry.
Created by Steph Cha and Ken Woodruff, Butterfly, is a spy thriller show that premiered on August 13, 2025 on Amazon Prime Video. Starring Daniel Dae Kim as David Jung, the show is about how Jung, a former US intelligence operative, has to live in South Korea due to a threat. However, his past resurfaces when his daughter Rebecca, who is now an agent herself, reenters his life.
Butterfly stars veteran actor Daniel Dae Kim, who is known for Lost and Hawai’I Five-O. According to Collider, the Kim-starrer series is filling the gap caused by Reacher. The show has also received better reviews as Butterfly has a rating of 68% on Rotten Tomatoes and Countdown has 38%.
Butterfly seems to have appealed to the viewers as the show also has an emotional core with the father-daughter dynamic being explored. This emotional core is missing in Countdown, which is only about action and chases. Therefore, Butterfly dominates the spot that Countdown had previously reigned over.
Jensen Ackles about what attracted him about Countdown

In an interview with Mens Health, the Supernatural and The Boys star, Jensen Ackles, talks about what made him choose the show. He states, “Amazon did a little matchmaking. [Showrunner] Derek Haas has a deal with Amazon; I also have a deal with Amazon. They were trying to find something for me, and then they brought in Derek, and he pitched me the idea. It had a throwback element that reminded me of old-school action movies from the ’80s and ’90s. The Die Hards, the Lethal Weapons, maybe some TV shows like The A-Team. It turned out that we had very similar taste. It sounded like something I would love to do, but it was Derek who I just really vibed with.”
The actor even mentioned in the interview that he is “absolutely pushing” for a second season of the show as he had “one of the best times” while working on the series.
Both shows are available on Amazon Prime Video.
