Purdue professor Adriana Harmeyer made her debut appearance in the 2025 Jeopardy! Masters tournament on Wednesday, May 7, joining an elite group of nine champions competing for substantial cash prizes. The tournament, which officially began on April 30 on ABC, represents a step up from previous seasons that featured only six contestants.
Harmeyer earned her spot through an impressive 15-game winning streak last summer that netted her $351,600 in winnings. This performance not only secured her place in the Masters competition but also ranked her 13th on the show's all-time regular-season earnings list.
Before stepping onto the Masters stage, Harmeyer had already tested her skills in the Tournament of Champions earlier this year, where she tied for second place and took home $75,000. The Masters tournament raises the stakes significantly with a $500,000 grand prize and the coveted Trebek Trophy on the line.
Who is Adriana Harmeyer? Her journey from professor to Jeopardy! phenomenon explored
Harmeyer's day job as a clinical assistant professor and archivist for university history at Purdue Libraries and School of Information Studies has proven surprisingly helpful for her Jeopardy! career. Her professional life keeps her constantly engaged with diverse topics, which helps maintain the broad knowledge base essential for quiz show success.
"It was a lot of watching the show, studying, reading, learning and reinforcing my knowledge of facts," Harmeyer explained about her preparation process.
She particularly focused on strengthening areas where she felt less confident, while also enjoying clues that feature wordplay or extra layers of complexity.
Before advancing to Masters, Harmeyer competed in the Tournament of Champions, which tested her in ways her regular season run hadn't. The entire tournament was filmed in just three intensive days, a mentally and physically demanding schedule.
"People don't always think about it, but that intensive filming schedule with multiple episodes a day, your brain is so committed to it," she said.
Declaring:
"It's a physical experience as well, standing for so long, every single day."
The competition brought together top players who created both an intimidating atmosphere and a surprising sense of camaraderie.
"It was a little bit strange going into this room for the first time, where we all knew who each other was, but we never actually interacted before," Harmeyer recalled.
Elaborating:
"I knew they were all going to be good and intimidating. After watching the first round, my fellow contestants were all incredible."
For the Tournament of Champions, Harmeyer refined her strategy, particularly around wagering and buzzer timing. She used the J! Archive website to review previous tournament clues and get a feel for the difficulty level.
"I wanted to be better at buzzering and be more mindful of wagering, especially with Daily Doubles," Harmeyer explained.
Further saying:
"I went in thinking I might be a little bolder with my strategy because I knew my competitors would too."
This approach paid off in her semifinal win and in game one of the finals where she made a calculated wager after all three contestants missed the final clue.
"I think that was my best moment of strategy, I did a lot of math to try to make sure I would be on the right side," she remembered.
What’s next for Adriana?
While Harmeyer ultimately tied for second in the Tournament of Champions (with fellow competitor Isaac Hirsch), the experience left her enthusiastic about future opportunities in the Jeopardy! universe.
"Being invited to the TOC is a mark of recognition, that we're good players; and I really appreciated the opportunity to do it again," she said.
When asked about future game show appearances, Harmeyer remained loyal to the quiz show that brought her fame:
"I wouldn't rule out other game shows, but I feel like 'Jeopardy!' has always been the one that I always wanted to do. If 'Jeopardy!' asks me to be there, I will be there!"
With the Masters tournament offering substantially higher stakes including the $500,000 top prize and an additional $100,000 charity donation, Harmeyer's Jeopardy! journey continues to an even more prestigious level.
You can watch Jeopardy! Masters Season 2 on ABC every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 8 p.m. ET, with episodes available for streaming the next day on Hulu.
