Scrubs, the NBC/ABC medical sitcom, which aired from 2001 to 2010, is coming back for a reboot. It is uncommon for majority actors of the original show to return for a reboot, but most of the original cast of Scrubs are returning for the show's reboot, which is set to be released some time during the 2025-2026 broadcast schedule.
As Deadline reports, John C. McGinley, who played a lead on Scrubs, is reprising his role for the reboot. He is joined by other original cast members, Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, Donald Faison, and Judy Reyes.
John C. McGinley is returning to Scrubs
Scrubs aired on NBC for the first seven seasons, after which it was picked up by ABC for the eighth season. A ninth season was also released on ABC, which had the subtitle, Med School. Scrubs followed the lives of interns, doctors, and patients at the Sacred Heart Hospital, shown from the point of view of Dr. John Michael Dorian, or J. D for the first eight seasons. It was then shown from the point of view of Lucy Bennett, played by Kerry Bishé. When the show began, JD was an intern, and by the end of the it, he was an established doctor.
John C. McGinley is going to reprise his role as Dr. Perry Cox in the Scrubs reboot. Dr. Perry Cox was a tough but skilled physician, who eventually became Sacred Heart’s chief of medicine. Though harsh toward J.D., whom he constantly mocked and belittled, Cox served as his mentor. Beneath his abrasive style, he deeply cared for patients and later became a teacher at Winston University.
John C. McGinley is known for playing Ned Barry in Another World (1985 to 1986), Tom Card in Burn Notice (2012), Remington Stewart Mansfield in Ground Floor (2013 to 2015), Stanley Miller in Stan Against Evil (2016 to 2018), Brian Kelton in Chicago P. D. (2018 to 2019) and Frank O'Sullivan in Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2021).
The reboot will follow JD and Turk, as they return to Sacred Heart Hospital to practice medicine again. Medicine as they once knew it, has changed, and things are done much differetly. But their friendship has remained the same, and the reboot will show us how the older characters and new characters deal with everyday life at Sacred Heart Hospital.
Other cast members from the original series, Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, Donald Faison, and Judy Reyes are also reprising their roles in the reboot as Dr. John Michael Dorian, Elliot Reid, Christopher Turk, and Carla Espinosa respectively. This is excellent news for the fans, who have missed the show dearly. Since five of the original cast members are already confirmed to be returning for the reboot, Ken Jenkins and Neil Flynn might also return as Bob Kelso and Janitor respectively.
Tim Hobert and Aseem Batra are showrunners on the reboot. They are also executive producing along with the creator of the original show, Bill Lawrence, and cast members, Zach Braff, Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke. The reboot is produced by 20th Television.
Scrubs is streaming on Hulu.
