Joseph of Egypt is a biblical drama that looks far from completely shaking up the streaming world. On the heels of The Chosen's record-breaking global success as a crowd-funded television program and House of David blasting off, another series on one of the most iconic figures of the Book of Genesis is in production. Joseph of Egypt, the newest Biblical series from The Chosen creator Dallas Jenkins, has been officially announced as the next big Biblical series to arrive at Prime Video.
Joseph of Egypt will be drawn from the life of the Hebrew patriarch Joseph, most famously known for his coat of many colors, being betrayed by his brothers, and becoming a powerful man in Egypt. The program is already attracting quite a lot of interest, owing in large measure to Jenkins' participation and the series' conformity to a pre-existing tradition of biblical translations that combine historical form with narrative drama. Everything we know about Joseph of Egypt so far appears below.
Who is behind the show?
Joseph of Egypt is being made by Dallas Jenkins, director and showrunner of The Chosen, a multi-season television series about the life of Jesus Christ. Jenkins is executive producing this new show, which is in production under a new agreement between Amazon Prime Video and the same production company as The Chosen. Jenkins is not officially set to direct yet, but his creative input for the show is going to be immense.
The show is being made by The Wonder Project team, a Christian production company newly established to bring high-quality biblical content to broader platforms. Jenkins' first foray into Amazon is part of an overall effort to reach wider audiences without losing scriptural accuracy and cultural authenticity.
What will the show cover
As the title suggests, the series will recount Joseph's biblical history in Genesis chapters 37-50. Traditionally, the series begins with Joseph as Jacob's favored son and the target of his brothers' jealousy, who sell him into slavery. Joseph finds success in Egypt by using his gift for dream interpretation to prevent famine and ultimately reconcile with his people.
As Jenkins' earlier narrative style in The Chosen relied on intricate character development and non-linear storytelling, the audience can expect the same from this series. However, no official story outline or synopsis has been released, and there have been no casting announcements thus far.
When will Joseph of Egypt be released?
There has not yet been a release date announced for Joseph of Egypt. With the announcement being so new, it's probably still in pre-production. Production calendars, casting news, and advertising materials have not shown up yet.
A rough guideline for television production times would lead one to believe that more will be known sometime late in 2025 or 2026, depending on when they begin production.
Why is this related to The Chosen or House of David?
Though Joseph of Egypt is an imaginative complement to The Chosen with Dallas Jenkins, it is not a spin-off and not part of the same universe. Joseph's history is in an entirely different timeline in the Old Testament, well before The Chosen or House of David narratives. Joseph of Egypt signals another advancement of biblically inspired content accessing the mainstream on big streaming platforms and can be regarded as a trend.
House of David, which also explores early biblical history, might have set a precedent for this kind of storytelling. However, there is no cited formal story or production crossover between the two.
Where will it stream?
Joseph of Egypt will have an independent Amazon Prime Video release after The Wonder Project struck a deal with Amazon. This aligns with Amazon's entry into religious and historical drama, particularly following the broad outreach experienced in such shows that positioned faith-based programming in front of bigger audiences.
What makes this series unique?
Joseph of Egypt feels most at home here based on the material and creative genius behind it. Joseph's story has intrigue, betrayal, redemption, political strategy, and personal transformation—everything it takes to have a good serialized dramatic series. If Dallas Jenkins is responsible, then there is also an expectation for possible follow-through on his committed attention to character-driven storytelling.
All that aside, until casting is revealed, production design is settled, and shot choices are announced, it's speculation at this stage how this vision of Joseph's life will look or be different from the attempts in film or television that came before.
