Doctor Who, the show that has been running for decades since 1963, has explored time, space, and everything in between. The show follows the Doctor, a Time Lord who travels in the TARDIS with a companion. But after the most recent season that wrapped in July 2025, there hasn't been much word of a new season or show.
Karen Gillan, who once played one of the most popular companions in the series, has revealed she’d be open to stepping back into the Whoniverse. But there’s a twist. Gillan said that she will return only under one very specific condition.
Karen Gillan’s Doctor Who terms
Karen Gillan is best remembered for her role as Amy Pond, the Scottish companion who traveled with Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor. Alongside Arthur Darvill’s Rory, Amy became central to some of the most memorable episodes of the modern Doctor Who era.
During a recent appearance on BBC’s The One Show, Gillan was asked if she’d be willing to return to the show. Her answer was a hopeful one, but it came with a catch.
Gillan said,
“If they’ll have me, absolutely,”
She added,
“But with Matt Smith and Arthur Darvill – it has to be with them.”
Fans would probably feel the same because Gillan’s Amy Pond would only feel right if the original trio, Amy, Rory, and the Eleventh Doctor, were reunited. Considering how important their bond was to the show during that era, it’s understandable why Gillan would want all three back together.
Gillan’s comments come at a time when other former stars have also expressed interest in reprising their roles. Matt Lucas has said he’d happily come back as Nardole, and John Bishop has spoken about revisiting Dan. While none of these returns are confirmed, the enthusiasm from past companions shows just how much Doctor Who still means to them.
Although the main series looks likely to take at least a two-year break, Doctor Who won’t be disappearing from television entirely. Instead, a new spin-off will keep the franchise alive, even without the Doctor in the spotlight.
The project is called The War Between the Land and the Sea, and it follows UNIT, the global task force that defends Earth from alien dangers. UNIT has been part of Doctor Who stories since the classic years, but this time, they’ll lead the story themselves.
The cast includes Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Russell Tovey, Jemma Redgrave, Alexander Devrient, and Ruth Madeley. The official description of the show is:
“When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT step into action as the land and sea wage war.”
Even though fans may have to wait a while before the Doctor’s next adventure, Karen Gillan’s comments have sparked fresh hope. A reunion between Amy, Rory, and the Eleventh Doctor would be a dream come true for many longtime viewers. At the same time, the arrival of The War Between the Land and the Sea shows that the Doctor Who universe is continuing to evolve, offering new stories.
