The highly anticipated second season of The Night Manager has drawn closer to release, with the production chief and authenticated sources revealing critical information regarding the new episodes. According to Ink Factory production head Barry Ryan, over 75% of the narrative of Season 2 will be set in Colombia, a dramatic shift from the show's previous locations.

The Night Manager season 2 resumes eight years after the end of the original series, returning some of the main characters and adding new cast members. The production started in 2024 and the series is to be released in 2025 on BBC One and Amazon Prime Video. The production has entailed various partners and international locations, which reflects the ambition and scope of the new series.

It has been reported that Tom Hiddleston reprises his role as Jonathan Pine and Olivia Colman returns as Angela Burr. Other returning cast members and some new actors are brought in, widening the scope of the show. The production crew has also been expanded, with some new executive producers and a new director on board.

The Night Manager season 2's story extends beyond the first novel by John le Carré, the first time that has happened for the show. With a greater production range and a story plot set in South America, Season 2 is designed to follow in the footsteps of the award-winning first season.

Setting and story location

The Night Manager season 2 will heavily feature Colombia, with most of the storyline taking place in the country, says Barry Ryan of Ink Factory. This is a change of scenery from the first season, where most of the action was located in the Middle East and Europe.

The Colombian setting was picked for how it amplifies the international nature of the plot. Cast and crew have shot on location, with much of the plot centered around Colombian characters and locations. The chronology of the series picks up eight years after the end of the first season.

The Night Manager season 2 takes place after the events of John le Carré's novel of 1993. The creator of the show, David Farr, remains executive producer and writer, crafting the storylines from the material of the set characters but exploring beyond the limitations of the original book.

Cast and characters

Some major cast members return for The Night Manager season 2:

  • Tom Hiddleston reprises his role as Jonathan Pine, the main character.
  • Olivia Colman reprises her role as intelligence officer Angela Burr.
  • Alistair Petrie also reprises his role as Alexander "Sandy" Langbourne.
  • Douglas Hodge reappears as Rex Mayhew.
  • Michael Nardone reprises as Frisky.
  • Noah Jupe reprises as Danny Roper.

Returning with the cast are:

  • Camila Morrone and Diego Calva as new leads.
  • Indira Varma, Paul Chahidi, and Hayley Squires also feature in new roles.

The head of production confirmed that this combination of old and new characters is intended to add to the existing relationships and conflicts. The enlargement of the cast corresponds with the larger-scale plot and geography.

Production and Creative Team

David Farr continues as series creator and chief writer. The Night Manager season 2 is produced by The Ink Factory, BBC, and Amazon Prime Video, and Georgi Banks-Davies directs this series. Hugh Laurie, the villain of season one, returns as an executive producer for Season 2, along with Tom Hiddleston.

Frank Murray and Frida Torresblanco of Hangtime International Pictures also join as co-executive producers for this season, as the show's plot becomes more global in nature.

Principle photography commenced in London and Colombia during 2024. The production head stated that the shooting included large-scale scenes and several international shoots. The BBC has confirmed that Season 2 will broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, and outside the UK, Amazon Prime Video will have distribution rights.

Release date and distribution

BBC and various entertainment outlets report that the anticipated premiere of Season 2 will be sometime in early to mid-2025. The Night Manager season 2 premieres on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK. Internationally, Amazon Prime Video will stream the episodes, just like the first season. In the US, AMC holds rights to the series.

Filming commenced in 2024, with production taking up a lot of the year. This follows the first season's trend of a year's production prior to release. Industry delays, including past strikes, had an effect on initial shooting schedules but did not stop the project.

Plot summary of The Night Manager season 2

As per official releases, the new season's plot is centered around Jonathan Pine eight years after the end of Season 1. It extends beyond the story of John le Carré's book and is a product of creative brainstorming sessions between the makers and the late writer's estate.

The setting in Colombia will have a significant impact on the story, and new criminal and spy elements will be added. Additional details of the plot are being withheld by producers, with only general storylines affirmed.
