Netflix’s Black Rabbit, starring two of Hollywood’s most sought-after actors, Jason Bateman and Jude Law, has captured everyone’s attention after its premiere on September 18, 2025. The crime drama follows two brothers, Vince and Jake, as they try to escape the police and the dangerous loan shark, Joe Mancuso, who was behind their lives.

The eight-part series ended with a finale that was thrilling due to the unrelenting chase but also heartbreaking due to the death of Bateman's character, Vince. While talking to The Wrap, the creators, Zach Baylin and Kate Susman, shared that their intention was always to kill the character Vince at the end. Baylin stated:

"That was always the intention."

More on this in our story.

Black Rabbit: Vince's fate was always to die, says creator Zach Baylin

Black Rabbit was among the most anticipated shows on Netflix in September. The show follows the story of Jude Law's Jake, who was thriving due to his restaurant's success. However, everything comes crumbling down when his brother, Vince (Jason Bateman), comes back. With the arrival of Vince, more trouble comes to the direction of Jake's peaceful life.

From the loan shark trying to catch them after Vince killed his son to the police, in the finale, all are seen chasing the duo down. However, the shocking twist at the end of the finale is what made the thrilling series heartbreaking. After the brothers reach their restaurant, escaping Joe and the police, Vince takes a drastic decision and jumps from the roof of Black Rabbit to protect his family from further difficulties and challenges that they have suffered due to his mistakes.

In The Wrap interview, Baylin shared that they always had the ending about Vince in their mind in Black Rabbit, and further shared that Vince had s*icidal thoughts from the beginning of the series. Baylin also agreed with Kate and said that Vince was a depressed character. He said:

"There was always this sense of it being a sacrifice at the end. It’s seeded very early in the show. Vince alludes to [suicidal thoughts] early on, and I think there was always a sense of inevitability to that. When Kate said Vince was originally darker, he was more of a depressive character than Jason actually portrayed him to be."

He further talked about how Bateman brought so much more into the character of Vince. As per Baylin, Bateman's performance as Vince made the character "charismatic" and confident even after making numerous bad decisions in life. This made the ending of Bateman's character feel liberating. He further added:

"He has a lot of confidence in the show for someone who has f—ked up so much. He still feels incredibly emboldened and righteous in his decisions and his way of life. That was something amazing that Jason brought to it."

He continued:

"And because Jason is such an engaging and charismatic person, that final act for Vince, I think it feels cathartic and almost giving to Jake in a way that we definitely wanted it to feel, but we weren’t sure we could evoke on the page."

Therefore, while the creators knew Vince would die at the end of the Netflix series, Bateman's performance added various layers to the character that made the end more meaningful.
