King & Conqueror made a striking debut on screen on August 24, 2025, with its very first episode titled “Invitation.” It is a historical drama with the suspense of a political thriller. The narrative throws us into a world of uneasy peace, tricky family relationships, and two men soon to face a collision they have not yet seen coming.
Harold Godwinson is preoccupied with issues at home, whereas William of Normandy has to deal with wicked characters at his court across the Channel.
Being at the heart of it all is Lady Emma, who is shrewd and one step ahead of the rest. King & Conqueror Episode 1 sets the tone for the show, introducing us to the main characters and the ones to watch out for, the dynamic between Wessex and Normandy, and an anticlimax that ups the ante on both sides.
King & Conqueror takes us back to 1043
King & Conqueror Episode 1 is set in the year 1043. England’s largest earldoms: Wessex, Mercia, and Northumbria, back Edward the Confessor, but their backing sets off a power struggle no one can contain.
Harold reports back to his father, Earl Godwin, in Wessex, that Mercia is creating trouble on the inside, but Godwin would prefer to focus on his reputation and his longing for a grandson to secure the family's future.
Meanwhile, the plot shifts to William in Normandy. He relies on his strong friend FitzOsbern and his sharp and politically astute wife, Matilda. William receives a message bearing the news that William is needed in the coronation by his fellow cousin, Edward. But King Henry of France has another request for William; he wishes William to bring back a rogue fugitive, Guy of Brionne. When Matilda senses that Henry is not being completely honest, she secretly decides to start searching for Guy herself.
These initial scenes in King & Conqueror pose the most important question: whose power originally lies in whose hands? William has to go along with what he's assigned since politics has left him no choice, and Harold accepts his role because he feels it is his duty. Observing everything discreetly is Edward’s mother, Lady Emma, who knows about power and alliances more than any other person in the room.
As the ships get ready to sail to Dover, alliances already seem shaky, and one rumor has the power to bring the entire kingdom crashing to the ground.
What happens in Dover in King & Conqueror Episode 1
While travelling to England, William is ambushed and attacked outside Dover by Mexican raiders. The situation soon turns into a messy fight with shields breaking apart in the tussle until Harold leads his men, and everything changes. Amidst the chaos, they rescue William and FitzOsbern and become uneasy allies from strangers in no time. It is a very cutthroat, filmic means of getting the two leaders face-to-face, with their initial greetings wrought with a sense of courtesy that will dissolve the moment crowns are on the line.
Back at Wessex, Harold’s heroism does not receive much appreciation. His father, Godwin, would not have any more fights, and Harold's companion Edith warns him that Mercia would never stop causing trouble.
At the same time, in Normandy, Matilda plays a leading role in spying. She tracks down Guy of Brionne before Henry's men can get to him and makes him confess the truth that Henry was the one who ordered the murder of William's father, Duke Robert. This appalling revelation is why Henry is so preoccupied with Guy and why he wants him behind bars. By the time William does actually land on English soil, he brings with him two weighty problems: a debt of gratitude to Harold and a secret betrayal back at home.
The coronation chaos and the Norman bombshell

In the first episode of King & Conqueror, the coronation in London takes a rather dark turn. Lady Emma welcomes her nephew William and offers a smile with a cunning motive and a proposition of a collaboration with England in order to keep Wessex and the Godwins down.
It is an awkward night at dinner. Emma hurls insults at King Edward, saying another of her sons would make a better ruler. She does not show any intentions of fading into the background. During the actual coronation, she persuades Mercia to engage in this ugly politics, and it is only at the last moment that the Godwins understand this coronation was never about peace, but always about power.
Harold takes William aside and reminds him of that Dover favor. What did Edward say? he pries. William says the king warned him about the trouble at Dover, which is an indication that Edward is scheming behind Godwin to move his pieces. An angry Harold storms off to investigate. Shaken, William has his ship relocated, and he wonders whether he has made a mistake by coming to London.
Then the bombshell is dropped: Matilda tells William that Henry has seized Normandy and was the cause behind the death of Duke Robert. The episode closes with both men caught up in storms: Harold raising disorder in England and William looking at a family crisis that might blow up into a full-scale conflict. It is game on in King & Conqueror.
