Paramount+'s Landman Season 2 is finally here, and it introduces a new character who is related to the protagonist of the series. Taylor Sheridan's Landman has never been short on hard-bitten men with battered histories, but Season 2 adds a different kind of storm to West Texas, an emotional one. In the premiere episode, the viewers are introduced to T.L., played by Sam Elliott. His arrival doesn't just deepen the family drama around Billy Bob Thornton's Tommy; it rewires the emotional core of the series.

Turns out, this isn't the first time that Elliott's working with Taylor Sheridan. Previously, he was a part of the Yellowstone prequel, 1883, where he played the role of the Pinkerton detective Shea Brennan.

Here's more about T.L. from Landman Season 2.

Who is T.L. in Landman Season 2?

T.L., played by Sam Elliott in Landman Season 2, is the estranged father of Billy Bob Thornton's Tommy Norris.

Even though the episode does not feature a scene of Tommy and T.L. together, or even directly introduce T.L. as Tommy's father, it teases that they do share a relationship. T.L. steps into the story as the ghost of Tommy's past that never really left. He's not a mythic cowboy raging; instead, he's an aging, lucid, and angry man sitting outside an assisted living facility. He is alone and staring down the sunset. There's more to it; his crankiness almost matches Tommy's.

In a short sequence, when a woman asks him to have his supper, he rudely answers that he'll have it after the sun sets. (No DNA test required!). But what establishes his link to Tommy is when an employee tells him that Dorothy has passed away, and he breaks down as he says,

"This dying a little bit every day? It's tough."

Meanwhile, Tommy also receives a call, and later he reveals that his mother is dead. T.L.'s presence in Landman Season 2 widens the themes of the oil drama. The show has always been about risk, whether financial, physical, or moral. With T.L. in the picture, the risk becomes a personal one. It would be interesting to see the son-father duo in the upcoming episodes as well as their dynamics.

How did Taylor Sheridan bring Sam Elliott for Landman Season 2?

Taylor Sheridan approached Sam Elliott to join Landman Season 2. As stated previously, the two have worked together in 1883. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he revealed how Sheridan called him up and asked him to join Season 2 of Landman.

"1883 was a long time ago, and to come around and have this opportunity to work with Billy is mind-boggling. I hadn't worked for quite a time since 1883. It was a long time. Life took me in a different direction for a while."

He added,

Then, I ended up with a phone call with him (Taylor Sheridan), and he said 'What are you up to?', I said, 'Nothing.' I haven't been doing anything since we worked together. And he said, Well, I'm about to put your a** back to work, and that's how it came to be."

When Thornton came to know about Sam Elliott's casting, he revealed that he was excited and started crying. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, he revealed,

"He's an inspiration to me, he has been a hero of mine for so long. Over the years, we've worked a couple of times together but never for long enough, and now we actually get to do it on a regular basis that's just means the world."

For viewers just discovering Sam Elliott through Landman Season 2, here's a little more about him. Sam Elliott has been an icon for over five decades and has a track record of acing every single role, be it a cowboy or a drifter, or a soldier.

He also earned an Oscar nomination for his role in A Star is Born. He also bagged a SAG award for his role in Taylor Sheridan's 1883. Some of his works include MacGrubber, The Ranch, The Hero, The Contender, and Hulk, to name a few.
